Area children rweived a holiday as the four area schools were closed. In Bruce county a total of nine schools were closed and in Huron 12 schools closed their doors. Early morning predictions suggested a possible 35 cm of snow could fall during the day, with high winds making visibility poor and driving eon- dirious da gerous. OPP reported dangerous driving conditions on many area roads during the day nc - sitating some road closures. HANOVER--The. Ministry of Education has put an end to hopes of extra funding for education this year, but the -director of the Bruce - Grey Separate, School Board says the steering committee on education taxes still has a case to •present. Bill Brown, director of education, isn't, . surprised that education minister, Marion Boyd won't be funding 6 per cent of education costs this year as some groups hoped. That announcement was made recently as the province cited com- mitments to other financial needs. Instead, Boyd said the government would aim to increase . education fundirig over five years. — But Brown said at the board's January 29 meeting that he doesn't think the so-called Amabel Task Force on education taxes should quit its efforts to change the basic funding formula for local boards of education. Brown ,said •the group is correct in its position that low assessment areas like Grey and Bruce counties don't get fair treatment from the current formula, but he warned it will be a three to five year fight with the province before any chan- ges are -mace. 'They're not going to change it overnight,. just like the province isn't going to go 60 per cent fun- ding (of education costs) over- night," vernight," Brown said. The separate board wasn't coun- ting on a big jump in provincial gents this year, but Brown said if the increase only covers the cost of living, tin: local taxpayer will again have to pick up the difference. Meanwhile, Southampton council has apparently. already thrown in dietowelon efforts to get changes in education funding. On January 28, council voted not to -give the second $100 donation to the Amabel Tax Force, saying, "it's not likely any benefit will derive" from the sing committee's ef- forts. BOOTS FOR KIDS A Wiarton woman is organizing an effort that could send truckloads of boots to Russia. Janet Pawsey got support from the Bruce -Grey Separate School Board at its January 29 meeting for her "Boots for Kids" project. Between February 4 and 21: she's collecting good used b6ots at schools that choose to participate. The boots will be sent to Russia, where there are reports of desperate shortages of children's winter foot- wear. It is simply a means of allowing the principal, Mr. P+c to determine what staff will be rcgnircd for the 1991/92 school teen. Praise to God is the heartbeat or worship and the pulse of human life. It's also a source of unity for members of the Christian church. On Sunday evening members the local churches gathered in South Kinloss Presbyterian Church to share avidcelebrate theirunity in Jesus Christ. The special service was held to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Indeed, hearts and minds were mated together as praise was of- fered to God through script,, prayer and song. As well, an exciting audio-visual presentation invited people to reflect upon our praise of God through the world around us. An offering was received for the work of the Canadian Bible Society and the Canadian Council of Chur- ches. hurches. Following the service, a time of fellowship was enjoyed by all. A sincere thank you to all who sluarei their spial gifts and talents to make this an evening of praise to Godo
