Hospital deficit this year is $15,000
The Wingham. and District Hospital has
accrued a deficit of $15,000 on the first five
months of this fiscal . year according. to the
hospital's treasurer, Gordon Baxter.
The hospital deficit has resulted because
of the delay in government funding for the
previous fiscal year. The hospital applied .for
supplementary funding to its 1981 budget in
June, 1081, to meet increased costs for
medical and surgical supplies, drugs and
other supplies and expenses and the wage
and salary settlements awarded to the
hospital's registered nursing assistants,
registered nurses, supervisors and para
medical and management personnel.
The hospital is using cash reserves to fund
the cashflow at the hospital while at waits for
the ministry of .health to make .a decision
about the supplementary funding,
"It's costing us money because we cant
invest our money," commented the hospital
executive. director Norman Hayes, following
the September 22 meeting of the hospital
board. "We will never recover the lost
interest and now. interest rates are coming
down,"
Hayes expects the ministry will announce
soon whether' the hospital will receive the
additional funding and the hospital can get
its cashflows straightened out, If the hospital
does not receive the extra money, it leaves
only six months in this fiscal year to recover,
observed Hayes..
"We are eroding our capital base to stay
afloat," commented the executive' director,
"We have. to keep taking money out of our
hip pocket tostay afloat,"
