Free rabies clinic
planned for October
--Free- rabies clinics ' will be held in Bruce
County during the Month of October, 1982.
The Lucknow clinic will be October 20 from
1:30 - 4:30 p.m. at the Town Hall.
The riskotf rabies to humans is of ongoing
concern because of the presence of the
• disease in the wildlife of the County. The
disease; once established in a human is
fatal. Control is established in several ways
including the following:
1. Have your dogs and cats vaccinated
annually.
2. Donot pet or handle stray animals, wild or
domesticated no matter how healthy or
friendly they seem. (Rabies can be spread by
healthy looking animals.)
3. If bitten, find out where the biting• animal
lives and report the incident to your
physician and to the Health Unit. (1+Wild
animals are not kept under observation but if
located will be destroyed and sent in for
testing.)
4. Farmers should be aware that cattle are
very susceptible to rabies. If an animal
becomes sick do not expose your bare skin to
the saliva of the animal.
So far in 1982, twenty persons have
received rabies vaccine, many. of these could
have been avoided had proper control.
procedures been observed. One episode
involved seven: persons and a dead fox.
The fox had been found dead and as a
practical joke, the finder took .the animal to
several local hotels, throwing it on a table
and exposing customers to the saliva of the
animal; this'was not common sense. Subse-
quent tests showed the animal to be rabid
requiring treatment to people who should
not have been placed at risk.
For more information on Rabies and clinic
times and locations, contact your local
Health Unit Office.
The Inspection division of the Bruce
County ; Health Unit has a short slide
presentation on Rabies that can be shown to
children and adult groups.
