apartment building and the town expects ,to
begin construction on its new fire hall under
the Ontario ' Neighbourhood Improvement
Program next spring. .The, town is also
seeking MTC approvalon a. main street
construction project to be started next fall.
Hanover '
Hanover suffers from a dependence onthe
furniture industries which form the town's
industrial base. People do not buy furniture
during a recession.
Major layoffs occurred at "all three
industries in June but the workers are being
called back. The companies include Peppier -
'Sklar Ltd., Hanover Kitchens and. Knetchel
Furniture.
The retail sector has not experienced
closings due tothe factory shutdowns but
have laid off some staff to cope with' the
stricter economic times..
According to the clerk -treasurer Gerald
Kuemenan, the payment of taxes has been
on tlme and arrears have not increased
significantly despite the layoffs.
Real estate is slow with some 300 serviced
lots sitting for over a year and no hint of
development in the near future. The sale of
houses is slow and some are being forced to
sell because they cannot meet their most•
gage payments. •
'Five building permits have been issuedfor
houses this year. People have chosen to
rennovate rather than sell to build.
The town has just completed the water
pollution control ventre and 'a new trunk
sewer but everything is .on hold regarding
any future development.
Kuemenan says he is an optimist. He is
continent the town ano the country will come
out of -the recession: If you stand on the
corner and yell you have no.hot dogs to sell,.
that is exactly what you will' do. If you stand
there andyell you have hot dogs to sell,
eventually someone will hear you and come
to buy.
The town is concerned about its depend-
ence on the furniture industry and is working
towards attracting a diversified industrial
base through an industrial commission and
the Chamber of Commerce.
The.,industries located in the town. which '
are not associated with furniture including
Gainers, formerly : Swift Canadian, Buckeye
Peerless Textiles and New, Life Mills, have
not been seriously affected by the economic
downturn.

Goderlch
• An encouraging sign in Goderich is the.
major expansion project for Domtar, men-
tioned previously. Champion Road Machin- .
ery Sales Ltd. has been hit the hardest of any
industry.. There. was a major layoff earlier
this year, but they have had some callbacks..
Collecting taxes has been a little more
difficult in Goderlch, but . administrator
clerk -treasurer Larry McCabe said firm
action has been taken 'in the past 'couple of
months and it's helped. "
•
There has. been a loss of business in .
Goderich, but McCabe said business is
slowly coming back. It wasn't necessarily the
economy that closed the stores in the first
place though, a lot of owners ..just retired.:
Houses have , been selling at a constant
level, Three new industrial building permits
have been issued.,
Wingham
New housingg
starts in Win ham, are
non-existent so far this year. This is down
from one last year and two the previous
years. Industries in town are running at, a
low level, with some experiencing continual
layoffs and callbacks. Western Foundry Co.
Ltd., Premium -Lloyd Doors,... Conestoga
Chair, Stanley Door Systems and Royal
Homes, make up the local industry.
There has been a steady 'turnover of
businesses in the town. Retirement again
has meant the loss of businesses which have
yet to be started again. Wingham does have
a market for houses, with mostly the lower
priced houses selling.
