Canadians spend
legs on food
Canadians have reduced
the proportion of their des:
posable income spent on
food; both at home and away
from home. — from 17,2 per
cent in 1980 to 16,8 per cent
in 1981,
These and other details on'
the .economics of Canadian
food consumption are con-
tained in the new pamphlet
from the Grocery Products.
Manufacturers of Canada,
"Food Prices and Pouts/A
better deal for Canadians in.
1982".
OPMC cites Statistics Can -
ads figures indicating that
"Canadian, spend less, of
their income on food that
ever before".
The .pamphlet shows that
Canadians.have continued to
spend less on their dispos-
able income on food over the
past .decade In 1971 Caned-
ians spent 18'per .centof their
disposable income on food,
boor it home and away from
home.
"Its the U.S.,. in compari-
son," says OPMC, . "the
share of the. average Amer'- .
can family's budget for food
rose from 16.2 per cent in
1980 to . 16.3 . per . cent in
1981."
While there is good news
on the grocery front, OPMC
acknowledges that other fac-
tors are contending to place a
greater inflationary burden
on Canadians,
"Canadians pay more in
taxes than we spend on food,
shelter and clothing combin-
ed," notes the pamphlet.
"This startling fact has
been . revealed- hi a study
showing that the average
Canadian family in 1980
spent $10,306 on direct and
indirect taxes: By, compar-
ison, the average family
spent $4,239 on shelter and
54,631 on food."
"Food Prkccs. and Profits"
pointsout that, according to
Statistics Canada, federal
and provincial income taxes
went up 281.3 per cent
between 1971 and 1981,
while government e%pendi-
tures increased. 260.4 per
cent in the same period.
Statistics for the same dec-
ade show that before -tax
profits from the food and
beverage industry went up
181;4 per cent, Farm prices
rose '188.3 per cent in the
same period. .
The industry's profits have
continued their downward
slide that began in 1978,
because "food and soft drink
processors` have been paying
more for raw materials, lab-
our and other costes," accord..
ing to OPMC,
"And though prices have
gone up as a result, they
haven't gorseup enough to
keep profits at their 1978
tevelss, Profits in the food
industry, is a percentage of
sales, have declined steadily
since then,
