`Think
safety"
say P
The Ontario. Provincial Police are asking
motorists to "think safely" while driving on
the highway this holiday weekend: In 'a news
release, Ontario Provincial Police Commis-
sioner
ommissioner Jim Erskine is makinga personal
appeal to all drivers who venture onto the
highways this Labor Day Jveekend td ' `Make
• a special effort to think safety". '
"We all need to remind ourselves about
driving defensively; staying alert and of the
fact that alcohol and driying can spell death
or serious• injuries to ourselves and loved
ones."
According to Corporal Ray Primo of the
Goderich detachment of the O.P.P. there
will be more 'cruisers patrolling the highways
because of the increase •in traffic. i
"`On the long weekend because of heavy
traffic we have more cars out," ° he .acknow-
ledged:
Although figures are not available, several
officers contacted felt that there is a general
increase in traffic mishaps and fatalities on
long weekends .due to heavy traffic.
According to Erskine, driving in heavy
traffic demands . discipline, skill and com-
plete attention to controlling your vehicle.
"lf drivers would take a moment to
consider the • responsibility they accept
beforestarting the engine of their vehicle,
that burden would serve' •as a constant
reminder."
O.P.P. officials are confident that public
will work together to help prevent accidents
this vyeekend.
