Pine River UCWmarks
20th anniversary
The Pine River United Church 'Women celebrated their
20th anniversary June 8, 1982. A 'receiving line . of Past
Presidents greeted former. U.C.W. members from . Ripley,
Lucknow,Kincardine, Langaide, Goderich,: Wingham and as
far away as Tavistock, while a, prelude of nostalic'organ-piano
music by Gayle Lowry and Mary Gibson was heard inthe
background.
After a brief sing song by' Linda Campbell, the President, "
Thelma Godfrey welcomed everyone and opened the meeting
with the U.C.W. Purpose followedby an old favourite hymn,
There's a Church in the Valley by the Wildwood.
The roll call, 'a memory of Pine River United 'Church,
brought back many happy memories of former years. Bertha
Scott touched everyone's heart when she sang, The Old
Village Choir.
To the stirring chords of. The Battle Hymn of the Republic,
the banners of the three churches of Union in 1925 - Congre-
gational, Presbyterian and Methodist were carried in by
Dorothy Coles, Bertha Scott'and Barbara Messenger, wearing
old fashioned costumes. They were joined by Sharon
Courtney carrying the banner of the Evangelical United
Brethren(1968) and by Norma Humphrey and Ruth Farrell
with the banners of the Women's Missionary Society and the
Ladies' Aid.
Audrey Fergusbn introduced the .theme and suggested
everyone pause for: a moment to reflect on the past, consider
the present and then with new purpose and dedication, forge
ahead to the future. After the singing of Happy Anniversary
1.1.C.W. and giving a brief report of our historical beginning,
Akudrey called on. Ann Boyd for reports from the past, some
going back as far as 1825.
Those giving reports' on• 'taking us back to our roots" were
Sharon. Courtney, Myrtle Ferguson, Dorothy Coles, Barbara
Messenger, Ruth Farrell, Ricki Kolke, Thelma Godfrey and
Isobel Wilken. • • . .
In keeping with our theme Bertha Scott sang, An Old
Fashioned Meeting: Margaret Funston narrated the merging
of the former Women's Groups into the United: Church
Women in 1962. To sum up these thoughts in verse Audrey
Ferguson composed the following poem:
The Birth of the United Church Women
Way back in the year :of "62"
United Church Women caused quite a "t'do
The W.M.S. and the. W.A.
Had filled the bill and paved the . way
For a new organization, that is 20 to -day.
The birth pangs, were a little rough ,
But the U.C.W. proved itself tough. •
There were those who deicared "I could never 'be";
But the .charteredmembers said "Just wait and see".
No longer content to let men run the show
If we make the money, we'll help spend the `dough".
For until that time, would you agree.
The men made decisions, while the ladies held tea's.
The men hummed and hawed, but couldn't come to a
conlusion,
If the women interferred, it led to; seclusion,
To tear down the shed or build a new fence
Whatthe women `did = was of no consequence.
No longer content just to sit in the pew,
While the men made the plans, as to what's best to do
With the hard earn't money the women had made
Enough is enough we'll get the bills paid.
We'll all ioull together through thick and through thin
The odds are against us, but with God's help we'll win.
Then General Council drew up a plan
To enlist all the women in their span.
One 'organization, was their plea,
Two women's groups,, they could not see.
Total . mission was their cry,
Things done by half - they did not buy.
Conserve the values of the past
New; changes. made - the die was cast,
350 thousand souls in all
Attended the first inaugural ball.
Bruce Presbyterial decided to meet
In Port Elgin church, to accomplish this feat.
With Women of Vision the future looked bright,
With Love and Compassion always in sight.
The answer at last to a long felt need
Just give them your help, they'll plant the seed.
Seminars, rallies, church services tbo,
When it comes down to the crunch,
They always come through. ,
Whether its problems at home
Or world problems abroad,
We'll all work together
And trust in our God.
