The Ripley 4-H Beef Club
has held two meetings to
date. press reporter Bob,
Blackwell has sent along
accounts of them. A very
informal meeting was held
• at the home •of Wilfred
Gamble, one of the club
leaders. At this first meeting
the' 1982 club exeautive
was chosen as follows,
President Paul Keelan, vice-
president Kenneth Thom-
pson, secretary Vicki
• Rutledge, and press reporter
Bob , Blackwell. After the
election of the executive.
members ;tied their hand at
making rope halters for their
calves. A treat was enjoyed
• by everyone after the
meeting adjourned.
The second meeting was
held in the Ripley Chopping
Mill now named the
Thompson Feed and Supply
Mill. It was an interesting
meeting with the Shur Gain
Feed Salesman Dennis Ring
talking about feeds for beef
calves and the part of
proteins in these feeds.
George and • Jean4 Marie
MacLennan of Agincourt
visited in Ripley with
Florence MacDonald during •
the weekend.
Up to Ripley and opening
their house here in the past
week were Mr. and Mrs. Roy
Jackson of Detroit. ,
Believe it or not, the black
locust trees around the home
of Niels Frederiksen on
Malcolm Street in Ripley are
• now snow white with their
hanging blossoms. Novv for
some wat.m sunny weather
so that the honey 'bees will
, come out to them. While the
black locust tree is native to
• the state of Virginia it is so
widely planted in countries
like Romania and Hungary
• that it is a major source of
nectar for white honey.
Apparently, the locust borer
beetle so destructive in
Canada and U.S. does not
exist in Europe nor on the
older trees in Ripley.
Two former natives of the
Ripley , area and • later
residents in Kincardine died
last" week. They were Mrs.
Jessie (MacCharles) Avery
and Secord Huston. Both
funerals were held at the
MacKenzie McCreath
Funeral Home in Kincardine
–, Mrs. Avery on Friday
• afternoon and Secord Huston
on Sunday afternoon with
interments in Kincardine
Cemetery. We hope to have a
more complete item next
week. Our sympathy is
extended at this time of
bereavement.
