It turns out that they bad procured mer- curial ointment for the declared pie - pose of applying same to some sores on their legs, but with the real Intention of anointing their bodies, as they had heard that thls was a certain way to recovery. This chapter has been described containing what may be termed Eli - she's private miracles, The first of thews relates to the multiplication of the widow's oil. The husband of this woman is brought before ns as one who was a faithful worshipper of Je- bovah, and on that fact the widow seems to base bar appeal. This 1s in some respects wrong, and In other respects not unnatural. It was wrong 1n the sense that no one has a right to expect to be regarded as pilon on any hereditary account. The woman :abutted i -hu banda. estate bad it was, but she did not Inherit neces- sarily her husband's good cbarscter. The .fact, however, that she referred to his religious character showed she expected some good to come her way on that account. It appears that the law of debt was one of remarkable se- verity, alike In the Athenian and Ro- man law asst also in the law of Moses. In the cane represented by the widow the creditor claims, now that the fath- er is dead, tbe services of the sons, as Ike was by law entltkd to do. The way In whkh Ellsba addresses hlmselt to the circumstances of the case Is very slgnlfcant of the method of Jesus Christ. Ellsha asked the woman, "What Weill I do for thee?" Jesus often asked the same question of those who came to Him for bealing or relief—"What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee?" No doubt the prophet knew what the widow wanted, yet a good purpose was to be gained la causing bar to state her case in her own words. Ellsha asked another question which Jesus Christ aleo put he day atter Ler arrival when th sen on some occasions. Mahe said, •' from her horse. We sent L baste for J e, whirt hast thou In the boos a nurse at beadgn-trters. - Ail that J Christ asked the before Iledisciplesow can be done day by day is done and it theybad g I nultlt proceed to satisfy the Lunger of the multitu It is God's plan to start with what we have. He will first take everything t la in our hand, and then proceed to His own work. Thus we become fellow -worker with God. Now E1aha proceeds to his work "Go, !borrow thee vessels abroad or all tby neighbors, even empty vessels." Rat this was not all he saki; he added, "Borrow not a few?' Then comes an instruction wbkb compares strongly with what Jesus Christ Himself stated with regard to our action In prayer. Tbe woman was commanded to shut the door upon herself, and upon her soon, and to pour oil into ll_the vessels. "And it came to pass, when the resseis we're full, that she said unto her son, 'Bring Inc yet s vessel: And he said unto bar, 'There is not a vessel more! And oil stayed.' It was the vessels that were exhausted, not the hand of God that was emptied. A notable lesson this, that It la never Cod who fails but niways roan who comes to the end of Ids capacity. Another miracle 1s recorded in verses 42-44. Good fortune now seems to bare be- fallen Enable Pions Israclltee were now transferring to the prophets what,. had once been given to the Levitical priests; hence they brought to Edda "bread of the fleet fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof." Surely this wee a new thing to Jellaba, and a great change from the mode of life which he had been latterly leading. He he gan life under very comfortable rir- cumstanccw, probably being one of the richest men who, up to that time, had been called Into the service of the 1 Lend. He bad, however, had his time of trial and suffering, bot now the sun seemed t0 be shining upon him, and plenty seemed to be at his disposal. What did he do with 81s good for- tune? It is remarkable that he did not selfishly appropriate It. bot at once said, "Give unto the people, that they may eat." Here again 1s a foreshadow- ing of the spirit and method of the Son of God. Whatever be had he held tor the Deneet of others. The servant said, "What, should I set this before a hundred men?" That is to say, hod small 1t 1s Tor them ; 11 1s more than enough for thee, but how far would it go In satisfying the hanger of a hundred men? Elijah has been oonaidered to . be • type of John the Baptlat, and in many respects Ababa bas been seen to discover traits of character not unwortby of being re- garded a typical of Jesus Christ; he was genial in lite, he was constantly going about in the cities and villages; Isis career was remarkable for the do- mestic miracles which he warted; surely In all these respects he re- sembles, more than any other prophet resembled, Him of wboin Moses and the prophets did write!—(From The Peoples Bible). • • • WORLD 1111ION8 Wise Are tbe emeses?
