Eastern Star Chapter marks 60th anniversary

Huron Chapter 89 of the
Order of the. Eastern Star
celebrated its 60th anniver-
sary last week, also honour-
ing one of its members,
Shirley Langridge, DDGM
for District 8.
One charter member able
to be present was Mrs. Eliza-
beth Rae, and three mem-
bers received their 50 -year
pins, Christina Currie, May
Porter and Evelyn Scott.
Murray Elston, MPP for
Huron -Bruce, was pjresent
and presented a plaque from
the Ontario government hon-
ouring the 60 years as well as.
a medallion from: the federal
government commemorating
the return of the Canadian
Constitution.
Huron, Chapter presented
the Worthy , Grand Matron
and Patron with honorary
memberships.
Distinguished guests were
present from all over Ontario
as well as members from
neighbouring chapters.
Huron. Chapter 89 was
instituted in December of
1921 in Wingham by Eliza-
beth Tay }or, WGM,acting as
deputy £or G. G. Elliott,
WGP. The charter was re-
ceived June 26, 1922, at the
constitution ceremony.
In the summer of 1923 the
chapter moved to the Angli-
can parish hall, which is the
same building in which meet-
'ings are held now. .In March,
1926, the chapter moved
back to the Oddfellows' Hall
above Currie's and' remained
there until 1954, when the
first meeting was held in the
Adair Building, on Alfred
Street, hatving moved to the
new location with the Odd-
fellows.
Iry 1964 the chapter met in
the present chapter room in .
the Masonic Hall, after much
work and planning had been
done. A dedication ceremony
was held after the June
meeting in that year.
The Huron Chapter is
proud to have had six District
Deputy Grand Matrons: Mrs.
Margaret Shane 1926.27;
Mrs. Viola Fox 1936-37; Mrs.
Christine Currie 1944-45;.
Mrs. Florence Reavie 1961-
62; Mrs. Kathleen Moffat
1970-71; and Mrs. • Shirley
Langridge 1981-82.
It also has been honoured
by appointments , to Grand
Chapter: Mrs. Florence Rea -
vie, PDDGM, served as
Grand. Electa in 1965 and was
elected to the Grand Chapter
Executive Committee for two
terms. ''Mr. Scott Reid, PP,
served as Grand Chaplain in
1969 and was elected to. the
Grand Chapter Estarl Com-
mittee for two terms. Mrs.
Kathleen Moffat,,, PDDGM,
was appointed Grand. Repre-
sentative of the Grand Chap-
ter of Michigan in Ontario for
the 1974-77 term.
A number of student min-
isters in the local churches
have been sponsored by the
Huron Chapter and have re-
ceived Estarl Awards at
Grand. Chapter.
There were 38 charter
members, of,whom Mrs: Rae
is the only one still living
among the chapter's present
membership of 162.
Whitechurch students complete courses

On Wednesday Robert
Currie who attends McMast-
er .'University at Hamilton
completed his first year in
engineering and was able to
return home. He has secured
a summer job at Milton
Agriculture Museum.
- Heather Currie has com-
pleted four years at Guelph
and has a Bachelor of Science
degree: She also has been
lucky to get a job with the
Ministry of Housing 'in' Tor-
onto for the summer. At the'
present.. she. is on .a three
week trip . to Europe with a
friend whose parents . live in
Germany. "

Inverhuron spent Thursday
and Friday, at the . manse.
Mrs. Phyllis Henderson of
Listowel and daughter, Mrs.
Grant Wolfe and son, Craig,
visited on Saturday with Mr.
and Mrs. Wesley Tiffin and
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Purdon.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Tiffin of
Wingham visited Saturday.
