Proper calibration ensures
crop spraying is effective
Many thousands of dollars
are spent each year by
farmers to control pests in
the field. Proper calibration
of equipment and application
accuracy insure that the
money spent on pesticides
achieves the desired effect.
Sprayer calibration and
use was discussed at the
Crop Pest Control course at
cCAT. by Milton Dietz, Sea.
forth, who has been selling
spraying, equipment, pestic-
ides, and safety equipment
for fifteen years.
• "Before spraying always
• remember that a sprayer is a
team of matched components
and that everything must be
in good 'condition for the
sprayer to work accurately,"
said Dietz. He outlined the
procedures which should be
followed to. prepare your
sprayer.
Clean, test, repair and
check all components and
wash out the tank. Replace
worn or damaged hoses and
check the screens. Fill the
tank with water and turn on
the pump, flush the boom
checking for leaks from the
sprayer and boom.
Run the pressure up and
down. Check if all the nozzles
are spraying the same am-
ount. Nozzles may be worn
and should be replaced.
Grease the universal joints
and tandem axles if required.
To calibrate the sprayer
measure off 150 feet, 45
metres and fill the sprayer
with clean water. Select the
speed and pressure that you
will be using under field
conditions.
Have another person hold
the calibrition bottle under
one nozzle as you pass the
first marker, and remove it
as you pass the second
marker. The Application rate
can be read from the scale on
the bottle.
If the liquidlevel is off the
scale use a test run of 75 ft.
22.5 metres and multiply the
results by two. Repeat the
test run to verify the results..
Accurate pressure is critic-
al when spraying. A good,
easy to read gauge makes
pressure, adjustments and
reading 'easier while in the
field.
Boom height is important
also to achieve the proper

• New Huron 4-11 club
will teach goatkeeping
•Do goats eat old' tin cans?
Can they leap tall buildings
at a single bound?. What does
goat's milk taste like?
As leaders of Huron Coun-
ty's newest 4-H agricultural
club, a goat club, Tony and
Fran McQuail, , R. R. 1
Lucknow, are prepared to
answer those questions and
any others that come up.
They hope to interest 15 to 20
young peOple (between, the '
ages of 12 and 19 as of
• January 1, PM) in goat
keeping. ••
The county wide club will
meet in the centrally located
• Clinton OMAF office once a
month on Saturdays. The Or-
ganizational meeting is'
scheduled for April 3 at 10
a.m.•
One meeting during the
summer will include a picnic
lunch and a tour of two or
three goat herds. Parents
• Will be a welcome addition on
the tour.
All joining the club will be
expected to either raise a kid
or care for a mature milking
doe.
"We want to make it as
open as possible," Fran ex-
plained. "Some households
may prefer a milking doe to a
kid." . •
• Club members will learn
• about breed characteristics,
selection, feeding, housing,
• management, breeding and
kidding, with demonstra-
tions of hoof trimming, tatto-
oing and dehorning. They
will keep a record of feed
• rations and cost, and man-
agement techniques.
Showing is not .the major
emphasis, but there will be
an Achievement Day, • Fran
promised.

• The McQuails have kept
Saanen •goats since 1974.
They use the milk from their
small herd for themselves, to
nourish orphan lambs and to
fatten their pigs. The pigs
thrive on the milk, . gain I
rapidly, and have no prob-
lemwith scouring, Tony
said.
"Fran introduced me to
goats before we were mar-
ried," Tony laughed. He
confesses eight years of close
association with goats has
turned a prejudice based on
lack of knowledge into a keen
appreciation of the intellig-
ent, interesting animals.
The two leaders of the
Huron County 4-H goat club
have one goal: to show the
club members that raising a
goat is fun.
