Blizzard creates white-out conditions in Ripley area

'Last week started with the..
end of the month of March
and ended with the start of
April. Maybe. that was the
reason that the weather of
the week started out as
spring with most of the snow
melting away. Last. Tuesday
evening, March 30, the first
lightning and thunder storm
swept the area. It com-
menced as a drizzle around
supper time and kept in-
creasing until by eight the
rain was . coming down in
sheets' and was sweeping
along on .the paved road like
drifting snow.
Then the week ended with
winter back just.. when
everybody had thought that
spring was here. On
Saturday afternoon a white
skiff of snow covered the
ground. By suppertime there
was a "white out" overthis
part of Western Ontario. As

On Sunday blizzard con-
ditions prevailedover a wide
area once more the.
Wingham radio was an-
nouncing cancellation of
church services, post-
ponement of hockey games
and other events, and high-
ways closed coupledwith a
warning to stay.off the roads.
At times the winds were
reported at fifty miles per
hour. Anyone walking in a
west to east direction had
' only to liftthe feet,for the
wind did the pushing ahead
but it was a different story
for the reverse way.
Jim Bell of Kincardine and
Niels Frederiksen of Ripley
started on Monday morning
of last week, March 29;
preparing the club house and
the grounds of the Kin-
cardine Golf and Country
Club for the coming summer
season.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bren-
nan of the Ripley grocery
store are •presently on a
three week vacation. Carl
and Pat left on Friday March
26 for . their holiday at
Hollywood Beach in Florida.
Here taking care of the Store
is daughter, Mrs. .Shelly
Barker from Collingwood.
Having clerked here
previously she is doing a
good job and she has the able
assistance , of part-time
clerks Cathy Fludder and
Sandra Stewart.,
Jim Moirier of Ripley was
taken •to Kincardine, and
District Hospital where he is

A man in this area reports
that the water coming from
bis deep water well coming
up this last week as white as
milk. Any ideas as to its
possible cause are sought.
Noted out on the Ripley
streets last Tuesday evening
was the Ripley fire truck.
However, the firemen who
had it out on . practice gots it
back before the heavy
downpour.
Finlay MacLennan reports
that the Ripley Midgets won
the first two games in the
current W.O.A.A. group D
playoffs with Elma Logan.
The first game was. 4 to 3.
Goal scorers were Eric
vander Glas, Paul Keelan,
. Terry . Irwin, and Danny
MacDonald. The game was
in Ripley on Monday
evening.
The next night, Tuesday a
full bus went to Monkton

Mike Nicholson with 3, and
singles by Kevin Boyle,
Shawn Morrison, Danny
MacDonald, Eric vander
Glas, and Larry Colling. The
next game in this series is
scheduled . for Ripley on
Monday evening this week,
providing the weather calms
down.
After the. Intermediate
game last Friday evening at
the Ripley Huron Com-
munity Complex which.
Ripley won 8 to 3 over
Teeswater there was a
steady stream of cars going
eastward. Looking at those
cars one would not have
guessed then that by
Saturday, evening driving
conditions would be almost
impossible. Several cars of
folks from this area who.
were away on Saturday
reported an extremely long
and difficult trip back home
that evening.
Sympathy is extended to
Mrs. Betty (Ivan) Cook of
Ripley on the death of her
father John Swan. He passed
away in his 88th year on.
Sunday in Wiarton hospital.
The funeral was . held
yesterday T% esday af-
ternoon at the MacKenzie
McCreath Funeral Home in
Lucknow followed by tem-
porary entombment in South
Kinloss Chapel . and. in-
terment. in Greenhill
Cemetery in Lucknow.
This coming weekend is
Easter, Good Friday, Easter
Sunday and Monday. The
rule by "which they are
determined is reported as
the Dist Sunday after the
first full moon after March
21st – the calendar start of
Spring. The first full moon is
tomorrow evening Thur-
sday, April 8, so it checks.
