Blytit Festival plans biggest seasn «ve r
Janet Amos, artistic dir-
ector of the Blyth Summer
Festival has announced the
biggest season in the .eight-
year history of the Festival.
The Festival will open Fri-
day, July 2:
The Summer Festival,
which began in 1975 with two
plays --and 16" performances
over four weeks, will in 1982
feature five plays, with 67
performances over an 11 -
weeks season ending Sept-
ember. 11. In addition there
will be two Sunday music
concerts.,
The season will open with
a new play about ayoung boy
from the city; who is sent to
visit his grandfather in Cape
Breton' Island while his par-
ents sort out their troubled
marriage. A warm-hearted
family =show, ' Down North
shows how the boy over-
comes the culture shock of
his new environment and his
family; .problems 'with the
help of his loving grand-
father andAw-found friends
in the rural community.
Peter Colley, whose last
play I'll Be Back. Before Mid-
night went from its premier
at the Festival to become one
of the most produced plays in
Canada with upcoming prod-
uctions across the . United
States and in Romania,.
brings a new comedy -thriller
to the •Blyth stage. Deathly
Balance tells of a humour-
ous, hardworking farmer
whoseworld comes apart
•
whenhe discovers hisnag-
ging- wife ° is planning to
desert him and his son, who
he has. dreamed . will . take
over the farm, has switched
to theatre . arts. Colley, a
master of combining hilarity.
with spine=chilling suspense,
puts his craft to work again in
this play premiering July 6.
Ms. Amos' .desire to con-
nect the people of rural
western Ontario with people
from other parts of Canada
brings Viola Leger and her
hit , one -woman. show The
Scrubwoman or La Sagouine
by international award win-
ning author Antonine Maillet
to the Blyth stage beginning,
July 27. The old Acadian
scrubwoman from New Brun-
swick spills out' her life in 'a
comicand practical way,
sharing the joys of her youth,
the hardships of poverty and.
above all, her indomitable
spirit. In Miss Leger's .tal-
ented hands,' a whole village
comes alive. ,
Ted Johns, whose. plays
The School Show, St. Sam
and the Nukes and He Won't
Come in from the Barn have
broken box office records,
teams with , award winning
composer John Roby to pro-
duce Country Hearts, a coun-
try and western omusical
comedy premiering August
3. The setting is a smalltown
bar where an unlikely group
of travellers, snowbound for
the weekend, whiles away
the hours entertained by the
Liona Boyd concert
to April 29
postponed .�

the Arts said he regretted

change may cause to those

concert that has been sold
out since Christmas. Full
refunds 'will be available to
ticket. holders 'unable to
attend on the new date if ,
their tickets .are returned to
the box office by April 16.

Management of the Blyth
Centre for the Arts . learned
last week that Miss Boyd will
not ' be able to fulfill her
engagement on Apri13-4- but
will appear on Thursday:
April 29, at 8 p.m.
Miss Boyd will be appear-
ing on The Juno Awards
ceremony on C.B.C. televi-
sion at the time of her
original Blyth engagement.
She -Will be , departing . for
