"Of course, the whole question of acid
rain must be a top priority, The matter has.
become even more urgent in view of the.
resurgence of coal -Dred generation of
electricity, and the impact of the proposed
cable under Lake.Erie to supply a U.S. utility
with power. Canadian -U.S. negotiations on
acid rain are vitally important to our
environmental future.
" "The situation with respect to Stouffville
wells really reflects the shortcomings of the
Environment Ministry's "responsibility" for
people's drinking water, and the effects of
disposal sites. Once the dangers came to
light, the Ministry refused to recognize the
valid information presented to them' by
independent studies initiated by the resid-
ents concerned. In other words, In addition
to not doing their own work in this respect,
Ministryofficials failed to acknowledge the
studies carried out by others on behalf of the
people of Stouffviile,.
"Municipalities have been forced by the
Ministry to go through useless exercises in
dealing with waste disposal sites where
problems exist. Decision making powers
have been taken away from municipalities as
Ministry officials dictate the; way they want
things done, In some cases, the Ministry has
refused to recognize practices which it
developed with Alite assistance of, local
officials some five or six years earlier."
