two years of secondary
school studies.. Murray's
high school education was
interrupted when his pres-
ence was required on his
father's farm.
However, for the young
Huron Township fanner, life
was not all work; during his
leisure, Murray could be
found playing a violin.
During the '30s, 40s and
50s, he was a member 4
"McDonalds" Orchestra",
composed of Murray, George
and Erma McDonald and
other musicians. They prov-
ided a mixture of modern and
old-tyme music for dances in
communities throughout the
Huron -Bruce region.
' A versatile musician, with'
a "keen ear", Murray, dur-
ing an evening's perform-
ance, could give equal time
to both saxophone and violin.
His range of music included
"piping"; although he was
primarily a `Lucknow High-
lander', 'Murray occasionally
joined Kincardine's "Pipers
drummers" for their regular
summer Saturday evening
march and concert down the
town's main street and park.
Murray's career included a
"hitch", during World War
Two, with a reserve (army)
regiment. He and A. Bark -
well, of Lochalsh, were two
of several hundred young
men, conscripted for a three-
month military course at a
training camp near Kitchen-
er. After their "homefront"
duty, 'Reservists' J. M. Mc-
Donald and A. Barkwell were
allowed to return to their
farms.
Until moving to Ripley, in
1959, Murray was one of the
• "McDonald Brothers" who
were owners -operators of
`Spruce Nook Farm', where,
for more than a quarter of a
century, registered Short-
horns/Yorkshires, were rais-
ed and sold, both privately
and by auction sales.
• After moving to Ripley,
• Murray was employed, part-
time, as bookkeeper. for dist-
rict livestock shippers at the
Ripley railway yards.
• For the last six years, he
was also employed, part -
'time, as a municipal building
,,inspector for Huron Town-
ship.
.14e was a lifelong member °
