. By Ab Wyws nesday February 24th on the
occasion of her 100th bir-
thday which was on Monday
of this week March 1st, 1M2.
Twenty-two people enjoyed a
luncheon at six o'clock
. followed by. a *lively
Programme coasting of a
mock. wedding readings, and
singing and later en cards.
Thebirthday cake was made
and ' decorated by Gordon
Bloor of Kincardine.
Mrs. Henry received a
plaque from the Prime
Minister of Canada Pierre
Trudeau at Ottawa and a
special letter from the
Ontario Lieutenant
Governor in Toronto as well
as thelocal members. The
lounge and hallway of Huron
Villa was decorated for this
special occasion
Home from Metro Toronto
was her son Donald and his
wife Gwen and theirs two
sons, Ian and Scott. Mrs.
Henry is the surviving
member of a family of five.
Deceased are her two
sisters, May and Sarah and
two brothers Malcolm and
Allan. The family lived on
the east half of lot 26 Con-
cession 7, two blocks west of
Ripley.
The folks of the Ripley
area extend to Mrs. Henry
best wishes on this happy
occasion..
Flying toFlorida
John and Elaine Kosmerly
and son John Jr. of Kin-
cardine are flying tomorrow
(Thursday) afternoon •to
Florida from Toronto air-
port They will spend the
next two weeks oii vacation
at the winter home of his
parents .Mr. and Mrs. Louis
Kosmerly in Edgewater just
south of Daytona Beach.
'John will have his Ripley
hardwarestore open, again
on Sat., Mar. 20.
No doubt you have noticed
that no politicians have said
"boo" about this metric
nonserne bene shoved on to
the Canadian people.
Needless .money has been
spent, is . being spent, and.
will be spent that could- be
put to much better use.. We
just say well we have to do
what the government states
to be the law. The govern-
ment and its opposition that
includes Joe. Clark and Ed
Broadbent and their parties.
as well as Pierre Trudeau
and his party. .Wellit seems
that in Brockville a . group
has been form. ed to oppose
Metrication: , in the ..
marketplace, and it is
calling itself "Measure
Canadian". Further . that
they • have hired George
McKinnon aprofessional
fund raiser to help them. He
has, some pretty fair
credentials. He says himself
"after spending six years in
the Second World War
fighting facisin, when .it
rears its, ugly head in this
country 'we all have to do
what we can..
It's time . people did
something about it. I'm
outraged. Nobody ever voted
for this thing. It was done by
Order -in -Council. ' I . think
they're going to, back up and
take:another look about. The
above statement Was made
by Mr. McKinnon to Bruce
Ward a writer with .the
Toronto Star and it ap .peaked
on Page 7 in last Saturday's
Star. '
Ab Wylds: who has un-
derstood and usedth'emetric
system in the schools and
university labs dating back
over 50 years now, thinks
that George ,McKinnon is
righton target. Furtherthe
article .says that the federal
government does not . intend
to protest the U.;S.
Ambassador Paul Robin-
son's
obinson's remark that the metric
system is "rubbish". And in
a Toronto news conference
he said Canada will be, at a
definite disadvantage - `if
Metrication is introduced • by
the end of 1983. A large part
. of Canada's trade is with the
U.S which is not adopting
Metrication in the
Marketplace.
Why' did we not leave it in.
the Science lobe? And .fur-
ther why is its general use
not put . to a vote for all
Canadians? Oh, yes in the
fund raising field here are
three of the achievements'of
George McKinnon - 4 million
dollars for the Royal Ontario
Museum, 8 million for the
Ontario Art Gallery, and 17
.million for the Mentally
Retarded. On.this same page
7 in the Star another headline
states "No plans a foot for all
metric land registry" *nd
further the E.F.L.. Com-
' • missioner. Jake Cadaur says
thatthere will be no 100
metre football fields. It is
staying in yards. Jake
Gadaur, as all sport fans
know, is, . the "Clarence
. Campbell" of Canadian
football. Ab Wylds does not
think that the Blue Jays and
Expos will be hitting home
runs by the metres either.
