Harold Orville Free
Harold Orville Free died in
Huronview at Clinton on
Saturday, January 16 in his
85th year.
He was born on March 30,
Di897 gin the Bervie area, the
est son . of the late
George Henry and Victoria
(Pollock) Free.
He moved with his family
to the fourth . concession of
Ashfield . Township and, .at
tended S.S. No. 6 school. He
later farmed, working with
neighbours and then at Tom
Richardson's sawmill before
joining the fourth regiment
in England during World
War 1,1914-18.
He married Ida Nib in
Goderich on April 16, 1924.
They moved to concession 1,
West Wawanosh Township in
1957 and then to Auburn in..
1963. •
The late ' Mr. Free was a
member of ` Knox United
Church u Auburn.
He was predeceased by his
wife in February Of 1979. He
was also predeceased by five
brothers, Clarence, Sidney,.
Wesley, Russel and Wilbert;
and two ,sisters, . Mrs. F.
(Olive) Thompson ,and Mrs.
Neal (Alma) MacDoniald.
;He is survived, by one
daughter, Mrs. Lawrence
(Jean) Plaetzer of the
Auburn area; three, . gran-
dchildren,. Mrs:. Terry
(Sherry) Foran of .St.
Thomas and Miss Wanda
Plaetzer and Lawrence
Plaetzer, both of London.
A funeral and committal
service were held at the,
Tasker ,Memorial. Chapel in
Blyth on Wednesday,
January 20 with the
Reverend. Robert. Scott ' of
Londesboro officiating
Interment was in the Blyth
Union Cemetery.
Relatives were present at
the funeral from St. Thomas,
London, Dungannon,
Goderich, Clinton, Blyth and
Auburn.
Thomas J. Salkeld
A long time resident of the
district died on January 29.
T. J. Salkeld farmed in West
Wawanosh Township for ov-
er 50 years and was a well
known orchardist and bee-
keeper.
Seventeen, years . ago Mr.
and. Mrs. Salkeld moved . to
Gough Street in Lucknow.
Since her death, in 1974, he.
has continued tolive and
tend his gardenu there.
The son of Joseph Salkeld
and. Mahala. Greer, he was
born in . Goderich Township
on December 11, 1885, on
the same date as his brother
George, who celebrated his
100th birthday as Tom was
celebrating his 96th. George
still lives in Goderich with his
son, Joseph. A sister, Mary
Rowed, aged 89, also lives. in
Goderich.Another sister,
Irene Rundle died some
years ago.
After serving four years
overseas as a transport driv-
er with the Royal Army
Service Corps in Greece, he
returned in 1920 and married
Amy Lillian Wark of Smiths
Falls, Ontario.
For. 65 years Mr. Salkeld
had been a .member of the
Masonic Lodge and for over
40 of those years he was sec-
retary of the Old Light Lodge
in Lucknow. He was a mem-
ber of St. Peters Anglican
Church.
Mr: Salkeld is;survived: by
three daughters, Margaret
(Mrs. John .Schmidt), Chan-
cellor; Alberta; Mary, (Mrs.
. James Boyle), Lucknow; Hel-
• en, North. Gower, Ontario,,
and a daughter-in-law Meg
(Mrs. Hugh Lane), Holyrood;
a son Larry died in 1973.
Thereare four grandchild-
ren, Linda (Mrs. Matt Plant),
Powassan; Lorraine (Mrs.
Randy Foxton), Wingham;
Lorna Boyle, Lucknow; and
Blaine. Salkeld, . Holyrood.
There are four great grand-
children, Sarah and Michael
Foxton, and Joshua and Amy
Plant.
A masonic service was
held at the MacKenzie and
McCreath Funeral Home,
Lucknow, on Monday even-
ing,. February 1, 1982. Fun-
eral service was held at St.
Peters Anglican Church on
Tuesday, February •2 with
Rev. G. Garratt and Rev: P.
Ruch. officiating.
Pallbearers were Donald
Gaunt, Harold Greer, Ron
Alton, Herb Clark, Harvey
Wightman, and Hugh Lane.
Honorary pallbearers were
A. E. McKim, Bill Porteous,
Clarence Greer, Orland .Rich-
ards, Pharis. Mathers, Bill

publication • of "Tales from
the. Grey Ox" are very
pleased with sales of their
175 page social history of the
rural community just north of
Lucknow.
The book was available for
sale only from early in
December and by Christmas
about 200 books were sold:
This was due mainly to the
kindness of a number of
Lucknow merchants in plac-
ing the books in their stores.
Copies of the book are avail-
able for those who haven't
got a copy yet.
Complimentary copies
,,were placed in the Lucknow
Library and the local schools.
