Kinlough family left homeless in weekend fire
By May Boyle
Fire completely destroyed
the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Delbert Hedley and family
early .Saturday morning.
Joyce, Debbie, Karen and
Gary had all retired for the
night. Delbert, who is em-
ployed with the County of
Bruce, was working on the
snow plow, as travelling was
hazardous with drifting snow
and high winds from the
east.
Paddy was watching the
late movie on television when
he noticedan unusual object
fly prist the window. He
immediately investigated,
finding the upper part of
their home. all ablaze. He
wakened • the family and they
escaped uninjured....
Lucknow fire department
reached the scene but by the
time they arrived, the driving
wind had. spread the flames
so that only a few household
`articles were saved.. This.
house was a village land-
mark.
We are sorry for the Hed-
ley family whose home was
destroyed by fire early Sat-
urday morning. They escap-
ed their burning home with
only the clothes they wore.
They are staying with her ,
mother, Mrs. Bertha Halden--

Dear Mr. Aitchison: .
I'm writing to you , for informationabout a `Great War
army soldier' (Pte.) Cleve. Aitchison, who went overseas, on
November 1st, 1916, with 'The 161st Huron infantry
battalion'; his regimental number, "654294"; when he
enlisted, . in January, '16, at. Hassan, he stated, as his
'next-of-kin', `` "Mrs. GeoZ`T. Aitchison, Lucknow" ", (this
information was obtained from a copy of the 1916 overseas
roll of the 161, obtained from The Canadian defence
department, Ottawa).
Additional information, obtained from a 1935 161 nominal
roll, compiled by a former clerk of the county of Huron, N.
' ' W. Miller, who was also an ex -member of The 161', records
•the death of C. Aitchison ashaving occurred, `65 years ago,
at "Aubigny, France"; he was then with 'The 58th.
(Toronto) Regiment and his death is reported to have been
caused by "trench fever".
My reason for writing is to request additional information
to be used for a 161 Great Wart veterans newsletter; it's
compiled, twice a . month, and circulated amongst
ex -members of 'The 161' and "next of kin".
Since I'm not at all acquainted, this letter to you, is "a
shot in the dark"; I picked your name, from a Bell telephone
book as one of two . "prospects"; if this "fallen" 161st
Huron is unrelated, perhaps you could forward this letter of
inquiry to the other `Aitchison', Robt., who is listed at, "R.
R. 1, Lucknow".
The idea is to re -write the obituary of (Pte.) C. Aitchison,
for a forthcoming edition :of the : "161 newsletter"; if you
possess any data or, picture of "no. '654294", who may be
one of your ancestors, it would be a valuable contribution if
you, would forward a letter to me. A. "Sandy" McDonald,
stating what knowledge you have of him. If you were to
co-operate to the extent of `loaning" a "snap" of (Pte.) C.
Aitchison, you would receive a free copy of 'The 161 Letter';
trusting you have enough interest in `Great War' soldiers of
'The 161' to reply, I am,
Yours truly, 161 Letter editor,
A. "Sandy" McDonald; Box 522,E
Clinton, Ontario.
