Lucknow's Second Choice,
with Art Helm at the wheel,
took two firsts at the Luck -
now Tractor Pull July 11 and
12. The Noisy Lady did not
appear at the Lucknow pull
because , the owners were
rebuilding her, adding a
• second turbo charged Chevy
engine and she was not ready
to compete.
A.ICinlough man died in a
car accident July 17. Christ-
opher. Turcotte, 28, died
•when the car he was driving
went out of control on high-
way 9 west of Riverdale and
struck a hydro pole.

driver of the second car was
Kevin MacKenzie, 18, of
Ashfield Township.

The Caravan Stage Com-
pany, originating from Arm-
strong, B.C., rolled into
Winghain with its 11 •Clydes-
dale horses, five hand -carved
wagons and 22, performers
like a modern day gypsy
caravan, for three perform-
ances of its highly acclaimed
musical, comedy, Horseplay,
August 6 - 8. Described as a"'
frontier day group and a
company of singing gypsies,
• the stage company perform-
ed their play under the stars
at the Wingham ball park.
Familiar on the backroads of
British' Columbia where they
have toured for 10 years, this
was the company's first
summer tour outside the
province.
The Lucknow Slo-piteh
baseball team and the Luck -
now Kin' smen slo-pitch team
cleaned house at the. Blyth
• slo-pitch tournament the
weekend of August 8 - 9,
• taking the championship and
consolation trophies.
• Seventy-five permanent
• and summer residents of
Ashfield Township attended
-a public meeting August 4, to
discuss the contentious issue
of go-kart • racing at 'the
former Port Albert airport.
The residents presented a
petition, -outlining their op -
Position to any change or
amendment to the existing
agricultural land use, desig-
nation for any commercial or
industrial use not directly
related to agriculture. Rep-
• resentatives of Can -Kart Ltd.
Rexdale, the company which
wanted to lease the land for
go-kart racing, did not attend
the meeting. Cliff Living-
• ston, who leases the property
from its • German •owners,
came in at the end of the
meeting and assured those in
attendance, if Can -Kart
would not attend a public
meeting to explain their, pro-
posal, be would not lease the
• land to them for go-kart
racing. •
Lucknow Clerk -treasurer
Alf Herbert died at Wingham
and District Hospital on
August 13 following a 'short
illness. A member of the
Royal Canadian Legion and
the Lucknow Lions Club; he
had served as the village
clerk -treasurer for nine
years. Members of. Lucknow
Village Council and the town
foreman were pallbearers at
the funeral, August 15.
Lucknow Village Council
passed a motion at •the
Angust meeting, permitting,
the village to collect interest
of Ph per cent over prime on
overdue tax bills. Presently
anyone owing money on their
taxes had been paying Ph
per cent a 'montli or 15 per
cent a year, while the Bank of
Canada interest rate had
climbed beyond 20 per cent.

baseball team won the
championship at the Lions
slo-pitch tournament held in
• Clifford, August22 - 23.

to the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture emergency task
force, formed to find answers
• to .the financial crisis facing
• Ontario farmers. -•
Paula Murray of R. R. 1,
Holyrood was named Miss
Lucknow Fall Fair from 11
ladies who participated in the
annual pageant. She was
crowned by last year's fair
queen, Lois Hanna. Lois also
performed the crowning dut-
ies at the Midwestern Ont-
ario pageant held at the
Lucknow Fall Fair, Septem-
ber 19. Named Miss. Mid-
western Ontario 1980, Lois
crowned her successor, Deb-
bie Lowry of Lurgan, Miss
Ripley Fall Fair.

• HUFFI, a group ,lobbying the
federal government for com-
pensation for homeowners
who wish to remove the foam
from their homes. Approxi-
mately 90 people from Huron
County attended the group's
organizational meeting at the
Lucknow Community Centre,
September 9. Grant Chis-
holm of Lucknow who initiat-
ed the Huron group was
elected president
Wingham and District
Hospital announced it could
not fund the CUPI settlement
awarded to the hospital's
registered nurses assistants,
until a supplement* bud-
get was approved by the
ministry of health. The hos-
pital's executive director,
Norman Hayes told the hos-
pital board of governors at
their September meeting,
there wasn't the cash flow to
pay the increases until the
hospital received more mon-
ey from the miniitry.
