Tour San Marino and Cattolica
Russell (Buster) and Mabel . W itby of
Lucknow 'toured Italy for three week this
spring visiting San Marino, the world's
oldest and smallest republic and the Italian
city of Cattolica• .
The picture essay accompany this article
features pictures Buster took during their
stay in San Mariao and Cattolica.
The Whitbys noticed the predominance of
the military in the streets of Cattolica and at
tiler airport. It was several weeks after the
assassination attempt on Pople John Paul
which could have been one reason for the
military presence, observes Mabel.
Buster was disappointed he didn't see one
Canadian flag throughout his tour of Italy.
There wasn't a Canadian flag flying before
any of the government buildings and he
couldn't find any on souvenirs. During their
stay in Italy the Whitbys visited the resorts
of Riccione and Rimini which were recap-
tured by the Canadian troops in 1944.
Russell bad been commissioned to take
part in •the Italian campaign but was
wounded in France in July, 1944. He was
hospitalized in Bayous, France for nine
moiths while .he made his. recovery.
He had met Mabel while stationed in
England and he kept a picture of her with
him while in France. While in hospital he
stood the picture up against a salmon can
used for an ash tray on the orange crate
night table next to his hospital bed. One
morning the matron, who wore a string of
medals across her chest like Churchill,
accused Russell of being violent the night
before and refusing to take his needles. She
said he hd waved the salmon ..can and
ripped a hole in the canvas above his bed.
Russell denied the allegation and later in
the day they discovered a piece of shrapnel
embedded in the orange crate beside his
