A Lucknow area landmark burned Monday
afternoon. The Pine River Cheese Factory
was destroyed by fire despite the efforts of
three fire departments.
Ripley Fire Department answered the call
about 4.20 p.m. Monday and called Lucknow
Fire Department to assist. Lucknow answer-
ed the call about 4.45 p.m. and Kincardine
Firemen were called in around 5.20 p.m.
• Lucknow Deputy Fire Chief William Ham-
ilton said the fire started in the old section of
the building which housed offices and the
laboratory. He, said he would not comment
on the origin of the fire which is undeter-
mined, as yet. The fire spread to the ware-
house, east of the fire's origin, destroying a
considerable stock of cheese which was in
storage Firemen were able to save the west
addition to the building but the intense heat
destroyed the processing equipment housed
in that area of the factory.
Lucknow firemen were on the scene until
midnight to help control the blaze and Ripley
firemen remained until 3 a.m. Ripley fire-
men were called back to the scene Tuesday
morning .as the stored cheese continued to
burn causing a flare up.
Deputy -chief Hamilton said the structure
of the building made it difficult to fight the
blaze., The cement block building had no.
doors or windows, making it impossible for
firemen to fight the blaze at its source. They •
had to contain the blaze by pouring Aivater on
from above the fire which is not as effective. •
