'fom Clark, a Chealey area fanner,
presented his plan for lowering interest rates
to 12 per cent, to Eugene Whelan, federal `
minister of agriculture, on Friday in Ottawa.
Clark's program to lower interest rate to
assist farmers in their battle with bankruptcy
was endorsed by •Bruce area farmers at a
meeting in :Chessley Community Centre last
Wednesday night.
Clark would not reveal the details of his'
plan following the meeting, except to say it
would lower interest rates to 12 per cent,
The media was not permitted to' enter the
meeting nor any persons' who do not' farm.
The farmers' wiveswere also excluded from
the meeting which was delayed: while several
wires, who .tad taken . seats in the meeting
hall,. were asked to 'leave.

Lucknow'smerchants have been playing, a
game of musical chairs with the main street
store fronts in recent weeks.

Through all, the moves. Lucknow's busi-
ness care lost two businesses, acquired one
newbusiness and the number of empty store
fronts remains the same, at one.
Ministry approves.
sewage project
The Lucknow Village Council hasreceived
word that the village's proposed' sewage
works project has been approved by • the
Ministry of the Environment and will be
placed on a waiting list for funding.
Council was notifiedby letter from J.W:
Giles,- assistant deputy minister to tl
Minister of the Environment, that the
preliminary application for acceptance under
the direct grant program has been assessed
under the ministry'sprioritq rating system
and the project qualifies for such a grant.
The project is eligible for a 75 per cent
direct grant based on capital costs net of any
other grants: The total estimated cost of the
ptoject is $I 287.055

Apply for grants to rennovate town hall
Lucknow Village Council isapplying for
two community centre grants and a Wintatio
grant to contribute to the cost of renovating
the exterior and interior of the Lucknow
Town Haft.
Council hopes the approval for the grants
will be received in time tohave the work
completed for the 125th birthday celebra-
tions planned for the summer of 1983,
Ode of the community centre grants will
cover 25 per cent of the exterior work. A
second community centre grant will cover 25
percent of the interior work and a Wintario
Arena is safe: inspector

Scarborough made a visual inspection of the
Lucknow .Arena on .September 25 and has
informed Lucknow Village Council, that the
arena adequate to .support all wind and
snow design loads, '

Gosling said the inspection . was carried
out from both ground level and underside of
roof level with the aid of a ladder truck,

Gosling was the consulting engineer. who,
redesigned the arena when it was rebuilt in

in other Arena Board business council's
representative on the board, Mb Murray, has
reported to Lucknow Village Council that
Clcason Martin of Ashfield Township has
been appointed Arena Manager for the
coming winter season.. ,
Martin is beginning ice preparations this
week so • that the arena schedule can begin

The exterior work includes roof repairs at
a cost of 53,000, repointing the brick where
necessary, caulking and= -painting windows,
aluminum soffit and aluminum eavestrough-

The interior renovations include lowering
the ceiling in the upstairs auditorium, wall
covering for the auditorium walls, front foyer
and downstairs meeting room and Moor
covering in the front foyer and the .down-

stairs meeting room. The projected' cost for
materials is 518,500 with an addition S9,000
for labour. A newhydro service, electric
panels and electric heating will be installed

Reeve: George .Jaynt said the application
should . be approved bjr the ministry of
Culture and Recreation because it meets the
criteria for a community centre grant, the
project wiil update an old building for
community use with the installation of more
efficient hydro and. heating service to cut
energy costs andfeduce the waste of energy.
