The following is an account of The Dark
Day which was also known as Black Monday,
contributed by one of our .readers. Raging
foresres in Michigan turned the sky black
in"" this -area on September 5, 1881, one.

The Dark Day - also known as Black
Monday - .was on Monday, September S,
1881. lt; oust have been . a trying and
perplexing experience for the people in this
part of . Ontario.
This day began much as usual- - the men
went to the -:fields, the children headed out
for school, .the women were doing the weekly
Monday .washing. But, shortly after the noon .
hour;oim.le; sensed that sonmthin . '

different and strang e. The skies took on a
peculiar colouring as if . perhaps a severe
storm wasapproaching. Suddenl the skies_
became muh darker ut no storm,no rain.
By two -thirty p.m. it was black .dark.
The schools had dismissed the pupils, the -
lamps were lit Mille homes; the animals and,
birds went through the performanceofretir-
ng

ing .fore the 'da . The situation was scary, Y ry
eerie, uncanny. The people were bewilder
ed, baffled and bamboozled. No onecould
remember anything like this happening
before. Some thought the end of the world
was at hand anid' acted accordingly.
Sometime during theevening the story
began to unfold. In the towns, the telegraph
wires conveyed the news that tremendous

like wild fire. Tuesday's papers were chuck
fullof accounts of the big fires in the State of
Michigan. . .
The waters -of the Maitland ,River turned a
mirky browncolour and' thousands of dead
fish lined either shore. Housewives who had
washings on the clothes line on Monday had
to do the job ail over again. In these years, it was a very good rural
DONNYBROOK FAIR fair. Of course, there was a bar. Whiskey

school boy, old men discussing Donnybrook • :long, Donnybrook Fair became famous or

took place there. Even, then; much of this .
was hearsay because . few, if any,' of these
men were old enough to have had first hand
knowledge of the fair. '
Donnybrook Fair wasin full swing_ during
the 1860s and on into the 1870s. The fair was
one of . the first in this area and actually
flourished for .a decade or more. People
came from many miles around in ,all sorts of
conveyances. ' In those years Donnybrook.
was, a thriving burg with a store, a school,.a
log . Methodist church and . several . shops.
carrying on. various businesses. About one
hundredyears ago the burg.had an hotel.
Down, Jefferson, .McLaughlin, McPhedrian.
were the names of some of the businessmen.
infamous for its fights and brawls. Legend
has it that the drinking and fighting sounded
the death knell of the fair. Finally, the fair
was moved across the township to Belgrave
to what was hoped would be a more.
successful setting.
