Evidence of arthritis found • in dinosaur skeletons That group of diseases we call arthritis has been around since the beginning of life on earth. There is ritter,Of that in skeletons of dinosaurs and ancient munlmys. But, there is speculation that one of the more than 100 different types of arthritis is relatively new. • The type in question is rheumatoid arthritis. This is one of the most common and potentially dangerous form of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis strikes most people in the 20-45 year age group, and seems to affect about three times as many women as men. The cause of rheum- atoid arthritis is not known and there is no cure for it. The disease can be controlled k with drugs in most cases. The suggestion that rheuma- toid arthritis is a recent addition to man's ailments, comes from the fact that is has never been described by the ancient Greeks and Rom- ans; it 404 ,not shewiup in Shakespeare or A*Bible, and it cannot be, ' in paitings before 1800. Itwas not even '-riaftie* Until the middle ,-ofihe 'lett century. According to Dr. Watson Buchanan, Director of ' the Rheumatic Disease Unit at McMaster Medical Centre in Hamilton, researchers sus- pect that the cause of rheum- atoid arthritis • may be a slow -virus. According to Buchanan; slow viruses are particularly hard to pin -point. "It will take time, patient, and above the money for research to find the answers," Buchanan states. • The Arthritis Society con- • ducts campaigns to support • research and related pro- grams. In Lucknow and area the • campaign will be held Sept- ember 8th to 19th and the goal is '51,700.00. Local • Chairman of, the society is Catherine Andrew. • Free information is avail- • able by writing to: The Arthritis Society, 920 Yonge Street, Ste. 420, Toronto, Ontario.
