$100,000 to prepare the track for go-kart.
racing, it .would be "some kind of undertak-
ing'kle said he is concerned with the initial
stages because . this type of thing usually
starts small and then expands. He; coni
mented' he was concerned about the racing
"and all the things that go .on with it".
"I'm not prepared to live with it,," he
stated.
Council's solicitor- informed . the meeting
that subsequent to ,.passing their secondary
plan, ,a municipality tnust pass a zoning
by-law. Murphy said Ashfield Township's
zoning by-law was not, prepared as yet and it
would take considerable time. He said he
could not foresee the zoning by-law in place
by next spring.
Murphy also stated that council cannot
pass a by-law prohibiting go-kart racing any
more than they can prohibit .. someone
building a pig barn.
It could be a policy c olic decision of colitic l
however, to institute .a licencingprocedure
which may convince Can -Kart they do not
want to locate here, suggested Murphy.
Several of the residents asked that council:
act now to stop ,Can -Kart 'before they get
their foot in a door.
As the me "": g was ending, Cliff Living-
: Ston, wholeases the airport property for its
German owners, Thoma, Thoma, Starnecher
and Schmidt entered the meeting saying he
:had received a one call: telling him the
meeting had been postponed from 6.30 p.m.
to .7.30 p.m. Members, of council said .,they
did not understand, because the meeting
had been advertised for two weeks with a
starting hour of 6.30 p.m.
•
Livingston told the residents he had , no
knowledge of Can-Kart's decision not. to
attend the meeting. Livingston said Can-'
Kart was prepared to .guarantee low noise
levels and explained they wonld be using
sound proof mufflers. He commented "these
go-karts could pass you at 20 feet and you
won't hardly hear them"., .
One irate resident stated: "That's a bald
face lief"
Livingston said he could notunderstand
the residents' objection to go.kart .racing at
the airport because it would bring. money.
into the township. . ;
Several of the residents told Livingston :of
their objections :tothe noise, overflow crowd,
traffic congestion and pollution.
One resident asked if it was true that the
gokart motors would be 175 cc motors with a
noise level of 80 decibels and Livingston
confirmed this. The resident then .pointed
out that in an industrial situation • at. 80
ann....
• A
decibelsa worker is required to wear hearing
protection: • .
When a • resident asked why Cate -Kart
didn't show at thee' meeting, Livingston.
replied: "i. don't know why they aren't.here,
send "a taxi to: get .them.'''.,:
• ,.Finally Livingston said if , C.t n.Kart was
• not at the meeting to explain What • would.. be
happening if they held the races, then the
•proposal .was 'finished,
"1 have to live in: thlg. township with you .
people," he said, "andas far as .1'm
concerned If they can't fulfill 'their promise
to me, then the 'deal ..isf.'' ' `•
• Livingston wenf 'on to say he 'was not •
prepared .t0 lease the. property. to Can -Kart
until they returned to council to present their
proposal. His announcement was greeted by
cheers from the residents. ,
Council • retired to their chambers to:hold.
