Five students from F.E.
Madill Secondary School
have been ;recommended to
the Ministry of "Education as
Ontario Scholars this year.
They are: Lynn Miller., son

and Mrs. George Underwood

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sjaarda

Ontario Scholars roust
have aebieyed, an overall
average of at least 80 per
cent on any six Grade 13
courses. Successful can-
didates receive a '8100
scholarship . from the
Ministry of Education.

commerce program;
Debbie Sjaarda, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sjaarda
of RR 3, Wingham, is one of
five Grade 13 graduates of
F.E. Madill Secondary
School this year to. be
recommended as' Ontario
Scholars. Debbie will be •
continuing her education at II
Centennial College,. Toronto,,
in the field" of mental
retardation counselling.
Kathy Underwood, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. George
Underwood, ' has been
recommended as an Ontario
Scholar by �I-F.E. Madill
Secondary School this year.
Kathy presently is' spending'
a month as a counsellor at
the Ontario . Pioneer.. Camp
near Port Sydney. 'She will
be entering' McMaster
University, Hamilton this
fall 111 a combined arts and
sciences course alining her
toward a career in medicine.
Marilyn Kieffer, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Georges M.
Kieffer of RR 2, Teeswater,
is one of five students from
F.E. ., Madill Secondary
School recommended as an
Ontario Scholar this year.
Marilyn plans 'to attend the
University of . Western
Ontarloin thefalL.
Faye Forster, Daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald E.
Forster of RR 1, Lueknow,
has been recommended as
an Ontario. 'Scholar from
F.E. Madill Secondary
School. Faye will be studying
natural sciences at
McMaster University in
Hamilton this fall
liandscapes are subject
of Blyth exhibition
Landscapes and natural
subjects in many different
mediums are the themes of
the group exhibition of area
artists now on display at the
art gallery of the Blyth Cen-
tre for the Arts. The exhibi-
tion
xhibition runs until August 29 at
Blyth Memorial Hall and is
. open to the' public free of
charge, from Monday to
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The exhibition is an invita-
tional show of the work of
seven local artists.
Jo• Manning, a printmaker
who has exhibited in several
international shows, is ex-
hibiting examples of her in-
tricately etched landscapes.
Ms. Manning lives part of
each year' near Londesboro.
Jack McLaren of Ben -
miller who has been painting
for over 60 years IS
represented by several oils
in the style of the Group of
Seven.
Barbara Fox who is cur-
rently living near Belgrave,
has lyrical landscapes in
watercolours on display.
Naturalist •William
Creighton of Lucknow,
reflects his profession in his
art , with landscapes and
natural subjects done in
watercolours.
Goderich artist Leda
McAllister rePeats the
natural theme of oils of
grasses and woodland.
scenes.
Mona Mulhern injects
note of whimsy and fantasy
in her interpretations in
graphite and coloured pen-
cil.
Ron Walker of Blyth is
represented by two acrylics
on patter and an oil of scenes
from the area.
The gallery is organized
and run by the Blyth Centre
for the Arts and runs in con-
junction with the Blyth Sum-
mer Festival. For informa-

Diabetes branch
sponsors children
at Camp Iluron,4a
The executive of the
Wingham and District
Branch of the Canadian
Diabetes Association recent-
' ly held an executive meeting
at the house of Isabelle
Burke. In attendance as
guests were Michael Salter,
Regional Director of CDA
for this area and Don Boos,
President of Ontario Divi-
sion of CDA who answered
questions and clarified
points as to the manning of a
branch.
The Branch is pleased to
announce that three diabetic
children living in the area
.... ...._ ._.....
are being partially,. spon-
sored at camp Huronda, (a
camp for children with
diabetes)' through the efforts
of the branch's fund raising
activities.
The executive discussed
money making ventures for
the upcoming year..
Plans for the first meeting
of the fall were. finalized.
Bob McMurray, a man han-
dicapped through diabetes
will be guest speaker. The
meeting will be Thursday,
September 24 at the
Wingham United Church.

The purpose I
This program will be inaugurated in
Ontario to provide recognition for
outstanding achievements or acts of
courage and initiative, by boys and girls
between the ages of six and eighteen
years. It will include individual awards.
presented for meritorious conduct, and
special group'awards for recognition of
the efforts of young people throughout
the communities of the province.
The reason
1 Extraordinary deeds of Ontario boys and
girls are often performed within the
community. We need you, the local .
nominators and newspaper editors, to
bring these outstanding young people
to our attention, so that we will be able
to give them the honour and public
recognition, which they so richly deserve.
Who is eligible
Young individuals who have performed
acts of heroism, perhaps endangering,
their own lives, overcoming disabling
• physical or psychological handicaps to
match or exceed their peers, or being.
involved in some worthwhile community
service endeavour. ,
