The Ontario Federation of 'Agriculture
(OPA) announced:today it will hold a public •,
meeting in Toronto en June 4 to discuss .
economic problems facing many members of
: Ontario's farm coninamity. _OEA•
President, Ralph Barrie,. said he
expects -Ontario Agriculture Minister, Lorne
Henderson, and provittciallreasurer, Prank
Miller, will attend, hivitaticitis have also
been sent to federal Agricultural Minister; -
Eugene Whelan; and Minister of Finance, is
Allan IvlacEticheti,
• Barrie said the meeting is necessary
because politicians have done nothing to
ease farmers' economic difilculties.
He said both levels of government have a
mandate to protect the best Interests of their
constituents, Yet the federal government
has accepted high interest rates and the
problems they cause, and the provincial
government has failed to put Ontario
farniers in a competitive position, Other
provinces have already introduced prograins,
to cuahlon. the effects ()thigh interest rates.
'the OFA has already called upon the
provincial government to provide lowacost,
lottgaterm financing, as well as aid for
eshortaterm . debt.
Barrie said that failure to provide help
• could have a disastrous. impact on .Ontario's
ability • to produce food. He estimated
Ontario' is already losing 1000 farmers a year
and predicted this could increase as more
farmers are forced out of business. He also
predicted that the present\ state of the
economy will discourage young people from
entering farming,
Barrie said he expects several hundred
farm leaders from across Ontario to attend
the meeting, He urged all Ontario MPs and
and MPPs to attend,
Chisholm was elected hoitourary president,
with Thomas Bell as president; W. 11, Green

. By 1907 the hospital was in operation with
Miss K. Stevenson as the superintendent. It
opened in. February and by September 70
patients had been admitted,
Rates for nursing and maintenance in the
first year were estimated at from $3.50 to
$16-iper vveek, depending en- whether the
room was public, semi -private . or priOate.
The operating room WAS worthy of note. A
Visiting doctor from Chicago said it was more
complete in some respects than most of the
large hospitals in that city.

The need for additional room, especially in
