Everyday, asyou. listen to
theradio or watch T.V., the
news is filled with political
upheavals ro social unrest in
all parts ofthe world. It
seemsifk as now more than
ever before, the attacks
against : established institu-
tions are gaining in viciousn
' ess and fear. Unfortunately
in many of t cases it seems.
as if none the events are•
forestalled. ey are just
• acceptedas part of one's
ji daily life.
In Britain over the Easter
weekend various gangs, or
"sunkies" gathered to the
seaside to fight . anything
whether it be innocent • by-
standers or other gangs. All
of this is taken as a matter of
course as it has been, going
An for several years. Must
.this be?
With the , advent : of mass
media we have : brought,
light into .our, living rooms,
the massacres and horrors of
wars half a world away:
Vietnam was the first 'War
that was really given inti-
mate coverage and day by •
day people,.,were treated with
daily dosages of guerrilla
warfare. However, as time
goes on, we are becoming
immune to the very horrors
we see. peopleMan.ypdon't
don t
even flinch as they : see
lineups of dead bodies left.
from a sniPer attack.
We are becoming so• im-
munized that we:,think of
'them' as statistics after all,
they are worlds away from
us. We can easily get up and
turn off all that horror and
retreat safely into one insu-
latedworld worrying about
better . things like a pay,
increase or whether to buy a
whole new wardrobe. This,
indifference would easily be
rectified if the danger ` was,
closer to home. What would.
happen, say, if the Russians
parked one of their submar-
ines by our Atlantic coast, a
submarine that could blow
every major Canadian city
right off the map? Good
question, but does it need an
answer?
The attitude of society is
becoming looser and more.
dangerous. as time goes on
and is being reflected in our
children. Wen the news that
president Reagan had been
shot was broadcast .in some
schools in the 1.1,S., the.stud-
ents cheered. If children.
have an attitude such as that.
towards the man holding the
most respected office in
America then- we all are in
trouble.
Indifference breeds in-
humanity of the worst kind.
Soon the awfulness of W.W.
II is going to be buried with
the last war veteran end, the
lives ` lost :in, their war will
become statistics. Themem-
ory of breathing loving hum-
ans will be heated out.
The attitudes of society are
being transcribed by even
the media. In Britain, the
fights mentioned previously
involving blacks were label-
led as race riots whereas the.
others involving only whites
were simply . fights. Such
coverage in the media can do
nothing but unknowlingly
implant social inequities that
will only assist . in further
seg ratio°n and unrest, Just
because some of the particip-
ants of the fights were black.
does not necessarily mean
that the issue that started the
fight was race -related.
Societies via's are not only
shown during warfare once.
conflict butalso at times of
• peace. A child is taught
through such violent measur-
es2, a slap:or spanking tobe
obedient. In turn the child,
as he grows older, will use
the same measures to coerce '
othersto his way. However,
the actionsusually' become
more violent as shown in
many cases of wife and child
abuse.
Our, society harbours an
n
unconscious double standard
towards men and women., A
woman, when working at the
same job ; as a man usually
makes only 62% of what her
male counterpart'' makes. Ev-
en when .a womanwants to
get a job she is penalized for
her ability to `'bear children
because most employers pre-
fer not to have pregnant
women on staff. '
•
With such inequities going
on how can society be comp
pleted healthy? And if a
society can't he healthy how
can weexpect to function
well with
others?
w
Many incidents that occur
now are the people''s.reac-
tion, whether director or
indirectly,to society itself, It
is; showing that something
isn't working. I can't provide
any solutions and I can't
pretend to even try. ' What I
do know is that something is
not right and we must work
nowbefore it's' too' late, We
are often prornjsed o' .'future
"brighter than 100 suis'
That future isIible but
i
only if we,tske ease at today.
