While the Wingham and District Hospital
now expects to end its year financially on an
even keel, thanks to an additional $88,000 in
funding from the Health Ministry, , the
ambulance \department, .which is funded
separately, still faces a deficit.
: Treasurer, Gordon Baxter, reported to the
hospital board last week that the department
still is not getting enough money from the
ministry to cover its costs.
The ministry finally increased its funding
to. what had, been promised last year, he
said; but anted that inthe interim the
• .hospital . had to, borrow nearly 512,000 to
cover its costs and the ministry won't pay the
interest
' He predicted the hospital will end its
financial year in April with a 53,500 deficit
on ambulance services.
Mr. Baxter explained later that the
problem ,in aamubiaance .funding arose in
1979-80 when larger than anticipated salary
settlements pushed costs over the budget.
The ministry 4unding for the ambulance
department that year. was 5125,674. he
reported, while actual costs ' . reached
5.130,886. ,
This year the ministry promised funding
of S135,225, a 7.6 per cent increase over last
year's funding but only '3.3 per cent above
last year's actual costs. While costs have
been kept pretty well in line for, 1980.81,
they still went up six per cent, Mr, . Baxter
said, which means the department again will
end up in the hole:
The hospital is forced to cover the
difference from its own funds. such as the
differential ' fee . charged for semiprivate
rooms.
Mr. Baxter said Norman Hayes, hospital
executive director. probably will be fleeting
with the ministry in an attempt to persuade
it to cover the ambulance costs,
the buying of manufactured goods.tv,
Personally the NOP candidate said he
would consider running again in the next
election but the decision would depend on.
his persoanl situation at the time.
"1 believe in what the party stands for in
its policies and r would probably run
again. Between nowaatnd the next election.
the NDP in Huron Bruce intend to build u p
their ridin g association and make the
public amen. aware of issues and the in-
dividual policies of
n-dividualpoliciesof each party," He said.'
