my father's heart just seemed to break. My mother,
masking ' her own . grief, nursed and cared for him,
keeping a cheerful welcoming home for the rest of us who ,
had to soldier on.t,nkful beyond words that when all
was over, three of us ere sent back to her. safe and well,
thankful, too, thatmy father, an invalid now, was spared
toher for seven gentle years.
They saw two of us through University,, all of us idto
happy and successful marriage, bringing grandchildren
to delight her. Alone after my father's death, she gave
herself in service to the community,, the Deaf, Marriage
Guidance, Home Advice, untilarthritis knawing at a
gammyy hi slowed and exhausted her. ,Time then to
p.
relax, gardening, chatting, reading; remembering.
At 75, a massive heart attack carried her to the very
gates of Death then brought her back. She -never saw her
little house again. We moved her precious books .and
pictures, piano and garden to my sisters bungalow. It
was like' heaven, she said, with bird 'and trees and
flowers and green green grass and rest and warm
affection. She lived evety day with joy as though it was
her last. , .
When she had this cardiac arrest at almost 81, we
thought she was gone. `Tears flowed free but we accepted
her passing as you must, waiting nearby while they
worked with her.' After a little time; I slipped back to
peep at her and she smiled. "Did I give you an awful
fright?" she said. "Don't worry. It's over now." She lay
there bonnie and serene, happy as a Queen. We went in
and out, one day; one night, another day.
"They're angels to me ' here; she said, "nurses,
doctors, patients, everyone." Then her dark eyes lighted
up. "This'll give you something more to write about." i'-
touched, her fingers softly. "I'm working on a piece this
"v minute,'' I told her. "I've called it LET ME TAKE
Y U BY THE HAND and it's all about you." She smiled.
" hat's lovely," she said. "You'll have to read it to me
assoon as it's finished," and 1 promised as I always did
before going to press. "
But not this tune, because, you see, she couldn't wait.
Again her brave heart faltered. 'Quietly, peaceful and
contented with us beside her, that night my another died.
