without her would be savage,
The meaning of the words is exactly
the opposite.
I tend to the former. Without women,
men could become savage. Which Ieads,
intosome praise for. the National Farm
Women's Conference.
Tarin women are starting to get
recognition from society for the role they
play in agriculture. Not enough
recognition, mind- you, but attitudes are
changing. I know of hundreds of farmers
who would have gone bankrupt were it
not: for the help and, encouragement of a
wife.
A federal study on rural women.. two
years .. ago revealed some startling
figures. They spend almost 30 hours .a.
week, on average, doing farm chores and . -
bookkeeping as well as another 53 hours
doing household chores.
I don't know, who penned the piece that
says. 'a. woman's" work is never done.

anannual meeting of a county federation

close-knit team, finished the chores in jig

The national . conference of farm
womenwere told they should become
active in all from organizations . --
everything from speaking out at local
milk committee meetings to competing
for top, electedposts on national com-
modity boards.
Agminister Eugene Whelan', told the
conference that farm men. must
recognize and accept the concerns facing
fann women, especially the desire to be
treated equally with their husbands by
law.
If that. ,stuff ► mentioned above is
correct - and I have no reason to doubt it
-4 then farm women are putting in the
hours `' of two, full-time jobs and not
getting a teary for either one of them.
It is certainly time that farmers will be
able to claim wages paid to their spouses
for form work as an expense on ince
taws. It is just too bad these claims could
not have been charged years ago, And it
is time, too, that the : Canada Pension
Plan was changed to allow farm womb=
to contribute and receive benefits when
they reach65.
I hope this organization of farm women
will continue to be successiul.Ihope they
get swampedwith memberships. I, hope
their members take their jobs seriously
enough tochallenge every top
agricultural position in this country,
especially some of those senior, gover-
nment positions held by men.
If this humble servant :can do anything.
to lyelp them; atdtieve their Seals, then I
\ will considert is year worthwhile.
No organization can exist for, long and;
be as influential as it should be without
the support, the help and the leadership`
that comes from women in today's world.
Bless you, gals, and may the Force be
withyou.

HELP US DEAR:imp TO UNDERSTAND WHY
This article 'appeared in an American farm newspaper
and I know the message it carries is just as appropriate in
Canada. as 'south' of the 'border.
Dear God:
As farmers, and ranchers,- give, us the patience ' and
wisdom to 'understand why : a pound of steak at '51.80 is
"'high" but a three=ounce cocktail at'$150:if acceptable.
Lord help me to understand why 53 for a ticket to a
moviq is "not bad", but S3.50 for a bushelof wheat that
makes 50 loaves of bread is considered unreasonable.
_ And a 50 -cent coke at the football game is "OK", but a
- 20 -cent glass ofmilk for breakfast is. inflationary. .
And corn is "too steep", at three cents' worth in a bole
of flakes, but flakes are sold for S0 cents a "serving.
• Aiso Lord, help me understand why l have to . give an
easement to the ' gas company so they , can cross my
property with their gas lines and before they get it
installed, the priceof gas has doubled.
While you'reatit, dear God, please, help us
understand the consumer who, drives by my field, and
raises his eyebrows .when he sees me driving a 530,000
tractor which he helped put together (at a'higher wage)
so he Could afford to drive down that right-of-way they
took from me -to build a road on which he could go.
hunting' and fishing.
Help us to understand why cigarettes at S1.50 for a
pack -and .a -half a -day smoker is ,a necessity when' that
amount for a pound of hamburger (which could feed four
people or more in a casserole) causes people to say "We
can't afford beef?" - . . -
What is the reasoning behind passing over a 55 roast
because "It's too high" to pay the same amount for a
six-pack of brew?--H.S. Sault Ste: Marie, Ont.
