"Bandaid solutions won't solve problems" -NDP critic
•
The Huron -Bruce New Democrats held
their annual general .meeting at the Boy
Scout Hall in Kincardine. David Ramsay,
MPP from Temiskaming, farmer and NDP
Agriculture Critic spoke on the problems
facing farmers and the need for long term
solutions which•dealt with farm prices and
commodity supplies. "Bandaid solutions
won't solve the problems though they may
buy some time" said Mr.' Ramsay.
Following Mr. Ytamsay's speech' a lively'/
discussion developed : on the topics of
supply management and farm aid. Con-
cerns were expressed. that farmers whose
only income came from their farm were at.
greater risk thin farmers who had secure
off farm jobs. While ,the members present
recognized that financial pressures have
forced many farmers to take off farm jobs
there' was a feeling that a farmought to be
able to provide a living for the family on it.
It was also felt that off farm income created
an unfair advantage for people who . had
good jobs and shouldn't be competing with
those trying to make a living from their
farm.
After considerable debate the Huron -
Bruce Riding passed the following motion.
"The Huron Bruce NDP along• with the
NDP Agriculture Critic,' David Ramsay
continue to explore ways -to ensure that the
support which agriculture receives from
Government benefits family farms whose
labour is primarily invested in the farm."
