Pharmacist addresses DH's women's auxiliary
Mr. Don Newson, Pharmacist . at the
Wingham and District Hospital, spoke to
aninterested group of women at the Nov.
25 meeting of the Hospital Auxiliary. He
spoke briefly about his work in the
hospital, dealing with the required drugs,
knowing where to get them in a hurry, and
trying to keep costs down. The average
daily drug cost for patients in Ontario is
only $2.50,- a small portion of hospital
costing. In this'area there is good cooper-
ation between the hospital and the local
liharmacists.
Turning to the topic of the day, Mr.
Newson gave an informative talk about cal-
cium requirements for humans with special
reference to loss of calcium which results in.
osteoporosis. This topic is being research-
ed widely at this time and many questions
about it cannot yet be answered.' Frequent
articles are appearing on the. subject and a
certain amount of misinformation has been
given out lately.People need to realize that
the loss of calcium is a complicated matter
about which man is presently in a learning
situation. Itis a matter of loss of bone mass
affecting the spine, hips and wrists, and it
is very difficult to test bone mass. By the
time osteoporosis shows up, it is too late to
reverse the damage.
That is why it is so very important to take
preventative measures early. These re-
quire. attention to nutrition. More phos-
phorous may be needed, or Vitamin D
which helps the body to absorb calcium.
But tod much Vitamin D can cause
damage, and should not be used in daily
doses larger than 400 I.U. without consul-
tation with a physician. The role of sodium
fluoride in, preventing the loss of calcium
from the bones is being explored, as is the
calcium content of unsoftened hard water,
Treatment with estrogen isunder study.
The amount of calcium /intake during
adolescence seems to have an important
bearing on the later condition. Exercise is
important in order to develop muscle
support for the bones, and walking and
swimming are especially helpful, along
with the use of a firm mattress. The chief
protective measure is the •inclusion of
plenty of milk in the diet.. Those who have.
allergies to milk should take supplements
instead. Check, the amounts Of elemental
calcium id products, e.g. dairy substitutes
contain no calcium.

At least 1400 or 1500 mg of calcium per
day are required in the post-menepausal
years. A calcium check is not given unless
asked for, but levels of calcium in the blood
should be checked with your doctor.
The' disease afflicts short people more
often than tall, white people more often
than black, and women more often than
men. Hence, we deduce that short white
women should be especially wary! Men are
more apt to be -affected after 70 years of
age, but women much earlier.
'Remember that doss of 'calcium is a
problem about- which very little is known.
Because it is such a complicated prohlkm,
consultation with your doctdrois important.
Mrs. Marilyn Wood expressed aiipre.cia-
tion to Mr. Newson.. She then •presided.
over the business ' meeting. Four guests
were welcomed, reports received, and
