ideas for township council
The only candidate to be acclaimed to
the West Wawanosh. Township Council
wants the Lucknow Arena Board to take, a
close hard look before proceeding with the
construction of a new arena,.
Rhea Hamilton, the only candidate to file
nominating papers before the deadline,,
was acclaimed to a council seat, while the
remaining two seats on the council were
filled in the recent municipal election.
Hamilton said she wants to see the new
arena built at the same location, so the ice
surface and refrigeration equipment which
does not require replacement can be salv-
aged.
The new councillor has a suggestion for
segi•egation of garbage at the township
landfill site. She said household segrega-
tion of garbage is a good idea and council .
should . act on township resident Fran
McQuail's recommendations. McQuail •ap-
peared before council last year, and re-
quested residents start segregating ,the
garbage in their homes.
Hamilton suggested groups suchas the
Girl Guides and Boy Scouts, who conduct
Paper and bottle drives to raise money,
could have depots at the gate to the landfill
site where township residents ,could drop
off. their papers and bottles for collection.
At present the groups only collect from
village residents and depots at . the
township landfill sites could increase the
recycling of papers and bottles..
Hamilton said it's a practical idea she
saw in use in New Zealand where lived for
a year with her husband, Klaus Seeger and
their two pre-school children, Peter and '
Sarah. The family has just returned from
New Zealand where Klaus worked as a
public health inspector on, an exchange
program.
Hamilton, who is the former editor of the
Blyth Standard, is a reporter with the farm
publication, The Rural Voice. She says she
has been interested in municipal politics'
.since her days as a newspaper editor and
she looks forward to becoming involved at
the local' level. Her father-in-lawis a
former West Wawanosh councillor and it
was at his instigation that she filed her
nomination papers for council before she
left for New Zealand last November.
Hamilton said she has talked with town-
ship residents who expressed the need for
fresh , blood on council and Hamilton
decided to run for council. She says she
was surprised to return home from New
Zealand and 'find she had been acclaimed
to council.
Hamilton has been. reading through back
issues of The Lucknow Sentinel and will be
talking. with township ratepayers in an
effort to bring herself up to date on council
business. She says she believes she under-
stands the issues and the history of .the
sewage treatment disposal controversy
which will enable her to make a credible
contribution to council.
Will discuss child care...
Rural child care needs have ibeen
identified in Grey and Bruce Counties
and the Young Parents Committee of
theConcerned Farm .Women, of,Grey-
Bruce have invited two officials from the
Ministry of C:immuni.ty and Social
Services to hear local concerns and.
ideas.
Bess Slumskie of ' Chesley said the
basis forthe meeting to be' heId Dec. 6
at the Chesley .Community Center,
came from a prior open house. Twenty
women ' attended that meeting, each
with the name of another woman who
couldn't attend but expressing interest.
"We e . encourage all people to come
out and express their innovative ideas,"
said Slumskie. ,She noted 'that' though
there has been good response from the
Walkerton to Tara area, there hasn't
been any from the Lucknow region.
