A .carpenter in town also helps with the wood supply bringing bits and pieces from „jobs he does. The boxes are constructed with an inch and a half entry hole. "It keeps the starlings out, that's the main thing. I've even found squirrels and several boxes with mice. I don't mind throwing them out in the spring." While he's checking the condition of the boxes and throwing out the mice, Bill also checks the bluebird nests; using a book to log what he finds. He counts the eggs and then estimat- es a 25 to 30 per cent casualty rate to arrive at the approximate bluebird population. Bill finds casualties result from broken wings, road spraying when the birds are young but primarily from some of the conditions prevelant in spring. After a warm spring day and a particularly cold night, he checked the young birds and found 15 had. succum- bed. Even though they are susceptible to a variety off problems, when using his sytem to evaluate the population, there are about 100 bluebirds in the area that weren't here last fall. Bluebirds usually lay five eggs though that will rarely drop to four or increase to six. Another thing that helps to offset the fragility of the population and the fact that frost is a major enemy • • • • y BM Henderson periodically checks nesting boxes he hat set up in the area for bluebirds. WARREN ZINN 528-3710 ALVIN ROBB 3954174 to the early nesting birds, is that many bluebirds go •through two nestings a year. That nesting usually contains four eggs. Some may even have three clutches of eggs in a year. Following the nesting season in the meadowlands. of Ontario/ the tiny blue- bird winters in the Florida area until the .spring. The delicate birds, suffered a great deal of damage to their population when a spate of unseasonable weather conditions plagued the southern state about 10 years ago. For all his efforts; the retired minister gains pleasure in hearing reports- of the upswing of the number of bluebirds in the area. Not long ago a local farmer phoned to say he had seen 12 of the birds together, something that is ver7 rare these days. . In his study Bill also has an excellent photograph of a bluebird about to land, which he spotted in a camera ad and of • which the photographer graciously sent a copy, free of charge. On another wall a watercolor of some bluebirds by Glen • Loates hangs, a gift from his children. Hopefully, with Bill's efforts and the efforts of other bird watchers and blue- • bird fanciers, the endangered bird can recoup its losses. A walk in the woods to a favorite fishing hole or down some railway tracks on a warm summer's day can be a little more special while noticing the birds nearby and especially the startlingly rich hue of the bluebird. 1 Lucknow • Skating Club Lessons Begin Wednesday, November 6th Class Schedules WEDNESDAY: 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. -• Power 'Skate 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. - Elementary 7:15 - 8:40 p.m - Novice I, U, ffl & IV, & Seniors SATURDAY: • 11:00 a.m. - 12 Noon--- Beginners 12 Noon - 1:00 p.m. - Elementary, Basic 1:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. - Novice I, 11, III, IV, Seniors 100c• 50°F / • I 6'G' . . • .... • • • • 4, • ... .. .......................... • for the price of 5.
