I.P.M. . • I Wingham walk to fund dog training Raising funds to help develop much needed seeing eye dogs for visually impaired Canadians is the goal of the first-ever national Canine Vision Can- ada Walk-A-Dog-A-Thon. The 10 kilometre walk will be held in Wingham on October 6. It vvill begin at Riverside Park in Wingham al 2 p.m. All participants should register one hour before the event begins. Faltering is straight forward; Anyone interested ; simply gets sponsors to pledge any amount of money per kilometernnd Then completes as much of the course as possible with his or her dog. For sponsorship sheets and informa- tion contact Grant Chisholm of the Lucknow Lions Club at 529-7524. Pledge formscan also be picked up at Agnews Jewellery and Gifts; Bain's Groceteria and Lucknow Farm Supply. The' C.V.C. is a non-profit organiza- tion dedicated to the training of guide dogs. for visually impaired Canadians. • "Through the Walk-A-Dog-A-Thon proceeds, C.V.C. will be able to fund final renovations of the training school and have a stronger financial base for 'their first year of operatians," says Ron Brown, executive director, Canine. Canine Vision Canada, is a project of the Lions Foundation of . Canada: National sponsors for the 1985 Walk-A- Dog-A-Thon are Labrador Owners Club, Lions Foundatin of Canada and Ralston Purina Canada Inc., Canada's ,largest • pet food manufacturer. • In 1984 The. Lions Foundation of Canada undertook the project of devel- oping a national dog guide for blind' Canadians -- Canine Vision- Canada (C.V.C.), a non-profit organization. An :old public schoolhouse in Oakville, Ontario, was chosenfor •the •site. Through the foundation's support, pro- ceeds from the local 1984 Walk-A-Dog- A-Thon and corporate and individual donations, the C.V.C. had a financial base to begin renovations to the old - schoolhouse. Currently, itis in its final stages of completion. • Due to the success of last year's Walk -A -Dog -A -Then in Oakville, C.V.C.has decided this year to expand the walk into a national fund raising event. ThroUgh your participation inthe National .1985 VValk-A-Dog-A-Thon, C.V.C. will become fully operational • and offer blind Canadians,the safest and most enjoyable form of inobilitY. • The school is designed to supply 120 trained. dogs per year at'no cost to qualified blind people anywhere . in • Canada. During the training stage, eaeh • participant in the program will be provided with transportation from any- where in Canada to the school; team training with their dog; and, room and board during this period. The cost Of this program is substant- ial. It currently costs .C.V.C. $5,600 to take a blind person and his new dog guide through the training program. By • the end of this year, the school hopes to have 20 graduates. Two pass with honors Susan Meyer, daughter of John and Kini , Meyer, Holyrood, passed Grade 6 piano with honours 'and a mark of 77. Lisa Johnson, daughter of Ray ,and Betty .Johnson, Ripley, also passed•Grade 6 piano with honours and a mark of 76. Both are students of Marilyn Murray.
