A mother's love, so deep, natural and
enduring, is all too often taken for granted.
When we lose it forever, we never quite
find anything to fill the space it once
occupied in our hearts.
Unfortunately, there are a few women
who use this love to .dominate the lives of
their children, even when they have passed
into adulthood and have children of their
own. Such a woman. was Katie Murdoch.
At first? she had secretly resented her
son Edward wedding ,the wealthy Lucy
Lockhart and tried to interfere in the"
marriage. Lucy was far too clever not to nip
Katie Murdoch's schemes in the . bud.
"You will always be welcome in my
house, Mother Murdoch," Lucy told Katie.
one day, while Teddy was present. "But
kindly remember it is indeed myhouse.- I.
own it. It is my intention that nobody shall
be allowed to dictate the course of my
marriage, and that, of course, includes
you!"
So Katie Murdoch had Surrendered her
son to another woman, and it galled her.
'She secretly vowed she would not allow her
daughter Anne to be stolen from her so
easily.
Anne Murdoch had developed from a
gawky, long legged girl, into a fully
blossomed young woman in the space of a
few short years. It was true she was not
exactly beautiful ,but she was physically
attractive a fact that had not gone
unnoticed amongst the swains of Redtrees.
Katie prepared herself for the challenges•
she would have to face' in protecting her
daughter. She watched . her every move
ment and chaperoned her on each social
occasion. The forces of nature are too
strong to be suppressed indefinitely and
Katie realized thatsooner or later, Anne
would fall in love. But Katie was not going
to let any Tom, Dick or Harry take away her
last child. The man Anne married would
have to accept some guidance from her
mother, whether he liked it or not. 'It was
under these somewhat distressingcircum-
stances that Anne appealed to her . step-
father. `
"Can I no go ootwi'out mi mother hang -
in' on tae, mi skirts?" she asked Hamish
Murdoch. "I'm a . braw lass and past the
age when I hae tae ask which body I may
walk out wi!"
Hamish Murdoch sympathized with the
-lass. Even though she was not of his blood,
he had alwaysloved the girl. She reminded
him of one of his own children and bis dear
first wife' who had all died of cholera when
Hamish first came to Canada.
"Oeh, dinna fash yesel lass. Ye mother
means nae harm," Hamish ,assured• her.
"She only wants frae ye tae find a good
decent lad tae marry wi. W ait a wee while -
'twill all turn out right!"
But the situation did not improve. Every
tikne a young man showed interest'in Anne,
Mrs. 'Murdoch was ready to throw cold
water on his ardour.
The Murdochs were one of the families
who were having a new house constructed
by the stonemasons. • •Three men were • '
employed.: two brothers and a lad they had
.raised as an orphan. They had taught hire
their trade and having reached the age of
twenty-one, he was free of his apprentice
ship .and a fully qualified mason.
The construction -was a source of great
interest to the Murdochs. They spent many
hours looking at the walls rising from the
earth and planning how they would equip
the new home. Anne, too seemed to spend a --
lot of time near the site but her interest
extended far beyond stones and mortar.
She had her eye upon the young stone-
mason. .Hisname was Allan Livingstone.
With that ingenuity which can only dwell
in the feminine mind, she gradually
induced. young Allan to take an interest in
her. On one occasion, she carne so close to
' him that he impetuously, stole a kiss.'
"Ye're a rude man," Anne had said,
pretending' to be shocked. "It's no decent
frae a lad tae kiss a lass, unless he hae
honourable intentions!" • //
"My intentions are honourable," the red
faced Allan assured her. "I shall ask ye
father if I might call upon ye."
Anne could -not help but laugh out loud.
Theyoung man had no idea what he was
letting himself in for.
It's no mi step father ye'll hae tae be
speaking tae - ye'll hae tae hae words wi'
nii mother. And that, Mister Livingstone,
will no be easy!" ,
