The'Aprii 1, 189$ edition of the Lucknow
Sentinel contains an article written • by
Victoria E. Gordon, .a member of the
congregation of the then newly opened St.
Helens church, which provides some. in-
sight into the history of the church. A por-
tion of the article entitled Pioneer Settlers
and Religious Work reads as. follows:
"With the prospect of the new church in
view how many memories will pass away
with the old one? How much we have to be.
thankful for' in the privileges we now enjoy
in comparison to the many drawbacks the
pioneer settlers hadto contend with. When
this new church was put up by easy stages,
one means of raising money was by holding
tea meetings oras they Called them then,
`soirees",as for instance, when one was
held to pay for the plastering of the church,
one minister jokingly remarked, "now
ladies and gentlemen we have gathered
here to eat the plasterof the church...."
The contents of the time capsule will be
turned overgto the W ingham museum at a
future date; says Mr. Errington.
