HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1985-07-31, Page 3The plans and drawings for the proposed arena complex for Lucknow were on public
'display at the Uons Club wine and cheese party last Thursday. The plans, drawn up by
local draftsman Dan Bellmore, call for. an enlarged arena floor along with an exercise
facility and raquetball court for the upper level of the arena shown on the left side of the

Said.
The fund raising committee has also, sent
letters 'to implement and feed companies
and others who sell merchandise in
Luckriow asking for their donation to the
project. The names of the people who have
made donations will be published in the
Sentinel as ' a further incentive for . giving
towards the new arena, says Arnold.
Most of'the money needed to build the
new complex is to be raised through fund
raising, private donations and-gol1`emment
•grants/ without the ., need ..of taxpayers
dollar said Hunter. Politically, 'Hunter
says , the LuCknow Arena Board which
governs the operation of the present arena
has "agreed in principle to permit the
Bons Club to spearhead a campaign, to
erect an arena complex."

Murray Cardiff, along with, West W awa-
nosh councillor and Arena Board member
Cathy Todd,Ashfield. Reeve John Austin,
Lucknow Reeve George Joynt'and Kinloss
Reeve Barry. Johnston, said they were in,
whole hearted support of the new arena.
However, funds from the municipalities
are currently not available for the project.
Slush Fund
Cardiff said the federal government had.
a number of "slush fund projects" which
could have been used towards the arena,
but since 1984, • these . funds havebeen
depleted. The only program which Luck-
now could apply for federal government
assistance is under section 38 of .the
employment programs where the unem=
iployed could work on the project.. •
"I congratulate you for taking the
initiative.. Although it could prove a
difficult..task for many, a community such
as this will make it work," said Cardiff.
Hunter Says Lucknow has been placediat'
the -top of the list for a Wintario grant when
the program resumes 'funding of worthy
community projects. He says' the Wintario.
grants were cut off hi 1984 in order that
con mitments to projects already guaran-
teed 'funding can be met. He has pot
received word of when W intario grants will
resume. ,
Some concerns were raised at the
meeting as to the need for the racquetballs
court and the gym facilities that• are incor-
porated into the arena plan: Hunter said,
the gym and racquetball courts has a small
overall impact as far as the ' cost of the
complex., Thesefacilities will be needed in
the future and can be incorporated into the
new arena "as the money is available
target Date
Arnold said the target date for the., new
arena complex is the Spring of 1986 or. the
Spring 'of 1987, although, this depends
totally on how well the fund raising effort
goes. He says he has heard ver• little.
opposition to the new arena from the cam-
.,munity and expects that the fund raising
tenture will be well received. In the next
wo or three months ' he hopes •the fund
raising will be' approaching the $400,000
mark.
