Farm forums
Some may remember the radio farm .
forums of the 1940's. Neighbors -gathered in .
homes and listened, to a half- hour radio
broadcast over CBC on •Monday nights at
8:30. The program topics related to issues•
of concern to rural' people.. A guide sent ..
from the national office provided discussion •
topics for' the groups following each broad
cast. The guide listed questions" for the ..
farmers and their replies were: sent back. to
CBC. The Provincial Secretary gave a. sum-
mary at the close of each broadcast of the
previous week's answers... ,
. The answers were forwarded to govern-
ment. agencies and other .groups as an in-
dicators of public opinion: • -
The farin forums were a. means by Which
farmers kept informed of the- activities of
farm, organizations and their responses ..
• were studied by authoratative groups.
Many' Co-ops, credit unions, and .marketing'..
boards grew out of -these forum meetings.
People were amazed that others in•the coun
try had the same concerns and ideas;, •
. Within . Huron Township. there were at
• least a ddzen of these•groups.whe , the pro-
gram peaked in the 1950's. • Parents or
_grandparents may have been members of . •
some of the township forums: Harmdhy,
• Purple Grove, Royal Oak, Good Neighbour; • -
Sunshine, Glen Elm, Maple Leaf;. Verdun, ..
Flowerdale, Srnokey Hollow; Clover •Valley •
and fatten.'
,The farrn forum became quite.a social ac-
tivity. The forums would gather for
township events such as picnics and rallies, -
and attend: a county . rally. Usually
delegates were sent' to the Ontario. annual
-meetingin Toronto.
•These radio farm forums gradually ,iisap-
peered in • the 1960's but ',are . well
remembered as invaluable educational pro- •
• grams and popular social gatherings. .
