homemade. Bees to complete tasks and also
have food and fun together were common.
The church was the centre of life. My Mc -
Cosh, grandparents drove the seven miles to
Kincardine, with a wagon and team of horses
and small children until a church was at-
tended at Reids Corners.
Church was centre of life
I remember sitting in a buggy with my
parents while my younger brother and
sister sat on a small seat in front of the
dashboard of the buggy. Many churches
held suppers and tea meetings and had
young people's groupsas well as regular
organizations and Sunday School. I have
gone to picnics by buggy but some went .by
wagon. I have gone to local plays and box
socials by sleighload and even to church. As
well as providing spiritual nourishment, the
church was a means of providing fellowship
with so many not seen until next week.
I remember my parents attending a
neighbor's wedding ' reception in his home
about 1910. Dancing was to the tune of a fid-
dler and organistin the largest room, which
'was usually the kitchen. My own wedding
reception was in our home in 1928.. The or-
chestra was free or nearly so and all the
donations went to the brideand groom.
Those attending were neighbors and
friends. Now such receptions are for anyone
and held in a complex with loud music to an

Many homes did not play cards but often
had good music provided by themselves or
neighbors and often sang together.
B6'ught first radio in 1938 When radios came into our homes, a
whole new field was opened. Bill and I got
our first radio about 1938. We listened to so
many local programs from. CKNX and other
stations. They were operated by battery.

Now for some memories
Now some memories— my parents going
visiting and taking the children about 1912-15.
We went in the forenoon and stayed for din-
ner. The adults talked and the children were
given something to amuse them or were ex-
pected to behave. I remember the hostess,
flooding my rice pudding with milk and I
protested and the talk I received when we
got home! You took the food offered to you,
hand ate it when you went visiting...
About the same time I remember visiting
looks at the future too
ning to be more appreciative of home fun
and music.
We know so much more about the people
of other lands than when I was younger: It
has made the world so much smaller
somehow and people travel to other lands.
Some people went to Torontoby train in the
first half of the 1900's to attend the C.N.E: or
to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon. Many
people spent their entire lives within a small
radius of their homes.
We played baseball and shinny on a patch
of ice at school usually with a homemade
bat and maybe a hockey stick of a tree limb
and a chunk of frozen material and had good
' fun::
At Continuation School, we played ball,
basketball and games. When the Jubilee
/Arena was built, there were many local
hockey teams. This arena replaced the, old
building which had beep used for Fall Fairs,
and natural ice in winter for skating. Now
we use artificial ice in the complex which
enlarges the period for using ice.
a home with a gramophone and how we ;lov-
ed it/ People even put on -a record and
telephoned .a friend when we first got
telephones so everyone could enjoy the
music,..
Billie Alex Graham butchered for a beef
ring and I had to get up early if I wanted a
ride when it was Dad's turn to deliver beef...
When we moved to the Irish settlement at
Purple Grove in 1916, we were foreigners at
first.. because..our ancestors had come from
Scotland. This community is -the only one in
the township to keep their one -room school
for: the use of the community for meetings
and reunions and social events. It has been a ,
great influence in keeping alive''a good com-
, munity spirit... '
So many areasdepend on the complex:
where sport has superceded so many former
activities. However, Huron and Ripley still
have a great , cooperative spirit and will
work together for a good future.
