Shirt tail parade remembered in Ab Wyld's column Ripley's Alive in '75. Was it ever! The success of the Ripley Reunion was proof of the community spirit alive in Huron Township which had residents working 'together to produce an event -filled weekend catering to people of all ages. Many old boys and girls returning .to Ripley were welcomed with open arms and treated to a weekend of good old Huron Township hospitality.. The weekend's eventskicked off with a craft festival opening at the public school at noon on Friday, August 1. An Old •Tirne Fiddler's. Jamboree in the Township Shed on Friday evening was filled to capacity. The crowd overflowed with people standing six or seven rows deep out- side the open doors. Fiddlers came from Teeswater, Goderich, Mitchell, Blyth, Dublin, and Hamilton. Ripley area par- ticipants who entertained the large crowd included. Joyce Courtney, • Mrs. Chester (Irene) . It became the, Royal Bank. of Canada and remained so' until 1978 when it was purchased by McKee Jewellers. We are proud of our history and our involvement in the community. A mammoth parade on Saturday saw the parade :route lined with hundreds of spec- tators. Parade/entries assembled just out- side (east) of Ripley at Murray Culbert's and travelled to the ball park straight in:the 8th concession: The number of parade entries made judg- ing difficult but some of the prize winners in- cluded: Dan. Collin MacDonald, Farmer Dan McDonald,. and Forester floats In the family or clan class with honorable mention to. the Gamble float; Teeswater-Culross: float,: Pine River Community, and Nurses Red Cross Reunion in the humorous class; Reid's Corners Wornens' •Institute, Ripley Agricultural Society, and 'Ripley Happy Hearts .in the .historical class; Ernie Waldon, John Farrell, and Harold Harrison in the antique horse drawn class. Following the parade Ontario Legion Massed Pipes and Drurnsand the Bluewater Buccaneers performed for the crowds. Joan Courtney, representing Jim Elliott, ,was crowned queen of the Ripley -Huron Reunion Saturday afterna&by--Crawford Douglas M.P. Mary .Jane Courtney, representing :Lowry Farm Systems, and Mary Lynn McLean, representing George McLean, were attendants. Thirteen area girls entered the contest and were each given an envelope designating who would be queen and attendants. "Memories of the Past", the pageant per- formed by members of the community, traced the history of Huron Township from 1848 to 1975. As with all the weekend events there was a tremendous turnout for Satur-. day evening's performance on an outdoor, stage set up behind the Ripley High School. The pageant was written and directed by Minnie Lock with Olwen MacAuley, chair- man of the pageant committee, assisting in directing. Adelene Martyr; and -R -Moore were the narrators for the evening. The pageant went off without a hitch due to the cooperation and participation of many Huron Township residents who provided an entertaining historical account for the huge audience. Sunday's events included a church service' in•the Ripley High School in the morning and a Lions Beef Barbecue in the arena in the late afternoon. ' Paris Concert Band per- formed an outdoor concert in the evening. Few who were .in Ripley on Sunday night will forget the hoards of people . who gathered for the shirt-tail parade. The following is Ab Wyld's account of the event which appeared in the following week's • paper. . "Last Sunday evening at midnight the villagewas alive t. at's..for sure. - People came in cars and waking down sidewalks, then in crowds right out on the pavement. All converged on the main Corner to see where the action was. At first it was just a case of lining the sides of the street.
