school day" with 400 old boys and girls
reporting for classes at the Ripley District.
High School while another 300 were
registered at the public school. ' Former
pupils renewed acquaintances and friend-
ships from their old school days in Ripley.
The Lewis Centennial ended with an old
time fiddlers contest on Sunday evening.
The Ripley arena was jammed to the rafters
as almost 2000 people came to see ladies and
men, young and 'old, exhibit their talents. •
Frank Scottdirected the contest which ran
until long after midnight.
•
Willis ..
m Hyde of Hensall was the oldest
fiddler to take part. A few other prize win-
, ners were Mrs. Chester Emmerton, Mrs.
Leslie Wardell, Clyve Munro,- Jack Ken-
nedy, and Glen Boyd.
So ended a successful effort by Ripley and
Huron Township residents to` welcome old
boys and girls home to join in the celebra-
tion of the arrival of Scottish settlers to the
area 100 years before.
The following anecdotes were a few of
those printed in The Ripley. Express which
carried a full account of the weekend ac-
tivities in its August 13 edition.
We apologize to the committee for the ex-
cessive rainfall. Having promised Jim
Bryce we'd arrange a bit of a shower for
Monday morning to make things more plea-
sant, evidently we were almost carried
away in our enthusiasm and just got the
downpour shut off in time.
Ripley -Huron Centennial wassuccessful
in every way, which is a claim some other
similar events cannot make.' On the finan-
cial side, the weekend showed credit
balance, due, in no small measure, to the
Scots canniness of treasurer John Willocks
who supervised speedyBedY collection of the
bawbeesand showed admirable restraint' in.
paying them out.
Nels Hodgins, Ab Wylds, and All Thomp-
son -have one thing in common.. They don't
think they ever wish to see a hot dog again.
After dispensinghundreds of the popular
"quick lunches" they have developed an
aversion to the humble frankfurter.
If all the film used in taking pictures at the
centennial was stretched out end to end it
probably would ,cover the . trail the Lewis
men used on' foot from Goderich to the
mouth of the Pine River.
THE RIPLEY POST Office still looks new. 1975 reunion and Marg Thompson is cur-
' despite being opened in July 1969. Don rently the postmistress at the village's
McLay has retired as postmaster since the postal depot.
