1952 Reunion celebrated 1
Over 100 families come here from Lewis Net Scotland •
In 1952 friends and old boys were reunited,
in Ripley for a Lewis Centennial celebraL
tion. Albert Wylds, secretary of the reunion,
sent invitations to people in Canada and the ,
United States encouraging them to come to
Ripley August 2,3,and 4.
'We expect this to' be ,a big reunion to
celebrate the . settling of this district one
hundred years ago. In 1852 one hundred and
nine families from Lewis Isle, Scotland,
came, to Huron Township in a group, add
these people along with others from therest
of the British Isles settled this district. They
cleared their farms, built homes, schools
and churches;. and changed this country
from a wooden wilderness to a settledcom-
munity.' Many of their descendants are now
resident in many parts of Canada and
United States: It is our hope to bring these
people and their friends together at this reu-
nion."
The invitation was well received, evident . .
by the crowded streets of Ripley on the. reu-
nion weekend. •

Full page/coverage of the event -by. The
Telegram- (Toronto) on August '2 began,
"Every spare room in/this Bruce County
village is filled this weekend. For Ripley, a
town without a hotel, has hundreds of
guests. Its population of 463 has almost
tripled for three days."
Chairman for the reunion weekend was
Reeve Herbert Farrell of Huron Township:
Ab Wylds was secretary, John Willocks
treasurer, and •Donald MacKay was
associate treasurer. Donald B. Blue, M.P.
for Bruce acted as master of ceremonies for
the weekend. ° Many members of the com-
munity made up the various committees
thatworked, together to plan a busy
weekend for. Ripley and Huron Township
residents and their guests.
The celebrations began Sat., August 2 at 1
pm with the Royal Canadian Air Force Band
of Clinton following parade marshal Don
McLay who lead the .parade.. from St. An-
drew's Church to Memorial Park. The head
of the parade was in the park by the time the
other end was starting, indicating its size.
A few of the prize winners included floats
by Huron Star Rebekah Lodge; Ripley
Women's Institute, and Purple Grove In-
stitute.
Ambrose Gamble and Charles Aiken had the.
best horse drawn vehicle. George Tranter
won a prize fortis clown costume and Mrs.,
E. Haldenby donned a prize-winning
historical: costume, Amelia Carruthers,
Bertha. Blue, and Michael Blackett were
awarded prizes for the, decoration of their
bicycles.
Following the parade, opening addresses
of welcome were given by Reeve Herbert
Farrell of Huron Township, Donald B. blue,
M.P. for Bruce;%and John Hanna, M.P.P. for
Huron -Bruce. Roderick C. MacDonald of
Ottawa, a Huron old boy, . delivered the
Gaelic message. to mark the centennial
opening; making reference to "this choice
community of Canada" and to • "our ex-
ceedingly
..
worthy ancestors whose renown
and accomplishments are a credit to the
land of heath and heather."
Ripley hosted a :softball tournament on
Saturday inviting teams from Cargill,
Chepstow, and Port Albert. The Ripley.
team captured ` the centennial honors,
beating Chepstow in the final game.
Saturday eyening members ,.of the corn..
triunity put ori a pageant of historical events
dating back. to 1852. The pageant was
designed by Mrs. Donald Blue and written. _
by Rev. Doug Brydon as a- vivid ./and ..true
portrayal of the journey by the first Scotish
settlers from the Isle of Lewis to., Canada,
making their home in Huron Township: '
An interdenominational church service at _
the Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon .
drew a..large attendance.. Rev. J.R.: Mac-.
Donald of Knox Church. was in charge of the
service with area and guest clergy taking
Part. A mass choir, representative of '
almost every church in the celebrating area
led in the singing, accompanied by the Kin-
cardine Brass Band. The Kincardine band
also presented a musical'program in the
evening in Memorial Park. '
The final day of the reunion was :"back to
