W 5's Jim Reed is a Dungannonite at heart
By Alan Rivett
Bomb blasts in Beirut, guerilla warfare
in South America - Jim Reed has exper-
ienced it all as a reporter and oo-host of
CTV's long running public affairs program
W5.
His jobtakes him all over the world to
everywhere .from Cuba to Moritania, in
—North Africa. He s interviewed many.ofthe
world's prominent people and; with the
show, has uncovered exclusive stories such:
as being the first to gain ' access, to the
fabled Diefenbunker, a fallout shelter for
Canadian heads of state, • in eastern
Ontario. But, there is another side to this
globe trotting journalist that even his
colleagues find hard to believe.
He's a born and bred country boy who
grew up in Dungannon and still considers
himself a Dungannonite. In fact, after
wrapping up the filming of the show which
ends anywhere from the end of May to the
end of June, he and his sons, Jesse, 7, and
Adam, 4, leave their ,Toronto home behind
to head to the cottage in the Dungannon
area.
Gardening
"It's the highlight of my Year," he said
about returning to his peaceful' country
retreat. "I like to put in the garden and see
the people that I grew up with."
He was born on Ashfield side of Dun-
! gannon on the fourth concession. After
four years his family moved to a farm on
the north edge of the village. He attended
the one -room school house in Dungannon
and, after grade 8, attended high school in
Lucknow, which he found a "little scary"
having to„,: leap Dungannon to go to
Lucknow.
Every summer while living in the area
he's often called upon to ad as an MC for
worthy community events which he readily
accepts. Earlier this month, he acted as the.
host of the variety concert for Doctor Corrin

the first story on the kidnappers which ran
