Mrs. wheeler retires in June
This June Lucknow Central Public
School will lose one of its most dedicated
and caring teachers in the person of Mrs.
Mabel Wheeler, , who will retire after 28
years of teaching...
Mrs. Wheeler decided to become a
teacher, thus following in her mother's
footsteps. Her interest in children also
influenced her decision to teach.
She, a Life long resident of Belgrave,
' Ontario received her . teacher ' training at
Stratford Normal School in 1941-42 and
began her teaching career at S. S. No. 2
Grey Township in Huron County. She
found herself teaching the children of the
children that her mother had taught. No. 2
Grey was dosed so between the years of
1943-1946 she taught at No. 4 Turnberry
and Morris in Bluevale.
In 1943 she met a young gentleman by -
the narne of Ken Wheeler whowas attend-
ing Beal Technical School in London. They
were married in 1945 and settled on a farm
outside of Belgrave.
Mrs. Wheeler did not leave teaching,
permanently . but did some supply work
from 1946-1961. In 1961 she returned to
regular teaching at Kinloss Central and in
1968 she moved to Lucknow where she is ,
presently teaching. Grade 8.
In talking with Mrs. Wheeler recently
regarding her many years in the teaching
profession she noted that today's students
. are more outgoing but at the same time
more dependent on each other. They know
more of many topics but less thoroughly on
some basic .Math and English, including
spelling. Geography is one of her favourite
subjects because there is so much to learn
both past and present. Math and Grammer
are also her favourite subjects.
Mrs. Wheeler believes , that English
should be stressed at all times because one
needs to be able to communicate and
express one's self.
The Grade 8 students who have passed'
through her classes consider themselves
among the lucky ones. They have been
given a solid foundation on which to build
there future education. As well, she took a
deep interest in each ndividual's personal
' needs.
For me this has been one of my very best
years in all my elementary education. I will
always remember the efficient manner in
which she conducted her classroom and the
great communication she had with her
students.
W e the 1985 graduating class wish Mrs.
Wheeler the very best of everthing in the
years of her retirement. It is our hope that
she will have many pleasant hours pursu-
ing her hobbies of cooking, walking,
visiting, playing cards and travelling. rm
sure we will all remember her motto
"When the going gets tough, the tough get
going". Best of luck, Mrs. W heeler!

Message from Mr. Davies
I would like to begin by dedicating this
newspaper to Mrs. Mabel Wheeler, a
teacher who has devoted twenty-eight
years to the service of students in the area.
W e are excited to have the opportunity
to produce our own newspaper in conjunc-
tion with the Lucknow Sentinel. On the
following pages you will find examples of
our students' work, reports from our
special activities, dubs; in fact it is a
history of our year at Lucknow Central
Public. We have completed the study of a
newspaper as our contribution for Educa-
tion Week.
All ads have been created for our local
merchants by our students. We would like
to thank these merchants for assisting our
students. The co-operation was so great we
,were sold out of space before visiting all
merchants.
Also, I would to thank the Sentinel Staff:
Pat Livingston, Thomas Thompson, Sharon
Dietz, Joan Helm and Merle Elliott for the
excellent encouragement and support on
this our first venture in the newspaper
business. As well as their excellent co-
operation the staff has given our students
complete editorial freedom for our paper.
Lastly, but most importantly, I would
like to thank all of our students for the
great efforts they have put forth. I would
like to specially thank Amy Gingrich and
Sandy Maclntyre, our editorial managers;
Tanya Neufeld and Clifford Fielder, our
advertising managers; Jonathan Nelson
and Rod Crich, our photographers; and
particularly Stephen Tiffin, who typeset
the entire paper on our computer.
W e're sure everyone reading this paper
has some fond memories of his -her school
days and we hope the efforts of our
students bring some of these memories
back to mind.

Hailey's Comfit returns
It's coming. Flying one hundred times
the speed of a great jetliner.
- Thr Hailey's comet has been meeting
with the earth every 76 years for more than
2000 years.
In late 1985 or early 1986 this mountain
of ice will again rendezvous 'with the earth.
It is guessed to be five billion years old and
about three kilometers across. The flating
tail of the comet is made up of gases and
meteors that are caused when the comet
swings close enough to the boiling sun so
that the solar radiation will evaporate, the
body of ice. "Thus sending a beautiful flare
of light across space. The nucleas of
Hailey's comet is too small to be seen from
the earth, so space crafts are going to be
spent up to transmit pictures of Hailey's
comet to earth. The scientists have been
hoping for a chance to finally get a close up
view to observe what the comet really looks"
like because it is one of the oldest pieces of
existance today.
In 1910 the last meeting with Hailey's
comet was very spectacular because it
came so close to the earth. In fact, the
astronomers said that the earth was going
to pass through Hailey's tail. People began
to panic because there were poisonous
gases in the tail. However scientists said
nothing would happen because the earth's
atmosphere would absorb the gases. Still,
people took comet pills that were supposed
to stop the gases from harming them, and
people built houses underground that had
oxygen tanks to stop the gases from
penetrating.
This engagement with the comet will )
the worst ever because the best show of the
comet will be on the opposite side of the
sun where we can't see it.
It is best for Hailey's comet to be closer •
to the sun than the earth, and also over the
years the polution or artificial illumination
in the sky will make it harder to see the
comet.
I'm looking forward to this because it
will probably be the first and last time I will
ever see It because on the next rendezvous
with Hailey's comet, I will be ninety years
old. -
