Group home operating...
from page 4
Betty says Fred is a really talent-
ed horse shoe .player and can throw
ringer after ringer, She encouraged him to
compete in tournaments at fairs, but he's
too shy. Jim finds pleasure helping her
around the house. All the residents like to
go for walks and some go to the restaurants
in town.
They don't need a great deal of super-
vision and ' vill leave the home for two to
three hours at a time. But, they always .
know Where to; find me, she says.
Wlhat angers Betty is the misconception
which the public holds about people with a
history of mental illness. She finds that
some people think there is a risk involved
in living with these people which she
quickly states is totally untrue.
"People ask .if I'm afraid of them,. but.
they've never 'given me any trouble."
She says, however, that the•residents are
generally accepted in the community. "I
don't think it (having the group here) has
hurt 'anyone."
Prior to .opening the group home, she
had no training in dealing with the elderly.
All the experience she has gained is
through on-the-job training. The most
rewarding part of the group home, is seeing
the residents progress both mentally and
physically. When they first came to the
home, they were extremely introverted and
would rather sit inside rather than exer-
cise. Now, .they, are more social and like to
be outdoors most of the time.
The hardest aspect of operating a group
home is the time requirements connected
with running it. She must be around the
house "99 per cent of the time" and it's
particularly difficult to get someone to help
out.
Every six weeks a field worker from
Owen • Sound pays a visit to the group
home. The field worker is a trouble shooter
who speaks on behalf of the residents to
make sure everything is running smoothly.
Betty says she is considering, selling her
residential home in the near future. The
'group home has been a good source of
iiia ome for..her as it has enabled her to
make many renovationson her home. She
says a group home is ideal"for "0auple but
is sometimes difficult for a single person
like herself to manage. She plans to
continue as 'a volunteer in the socialwork
field after her retirement.
World's meanest mother
With Mother's Day approaching and
with flowery tributes to Mom (all justifi-
able) the order of the day, we think you'll
find as we did this delightful change -of -
pace message refreshing.
An independent daily newspaper used
this tribute, written by an unknown woman
recalling the painful years in which she was
growing up, as the heart of a two-page
spread of Mother's Day advertising cont-
ained in a whole. edition devoted to this
most important event....
"AS A CHILD I had the meanest mother
in the world. Sne was real mean.
"When hen other kids ate candy for break-
fast, she niade me eat cereal, eggs and
toast.
"When other kids had Coke and candy
for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich.
"As you can guess, my dinner, too, was
different from other kinds."
"MY MOTHER insisted on knowing
where we were at all times.
"You'd think we were on a chain gang.
"She had to know who our friends were -
and what we were doing. She insisted that
if we said we'd be gone for an hour, that we
would be gone for one hour or less. She
was real mean."
"I AM ASHAMED to admit it, but she
actually had the nerve to break the child
labor laws. She made us work!
"W a had ''to wash the dishes, make all
the beds, learn to cook and all sorts of cruel
things.
"I believe she lay awake nights thinking
up mean things for us to.. do.."
"SHE ALWAYS INSISTED ON US
TELLING THE TRUTH, the whole truth
and nothing but the truth.
'By the time we were teenagers she was
much wiser, and our life became even more
unbearable.
"NONE OF THIS TOOTING THE HORN
OF A CAIS for us to come running. She
embarrassed us no end by making our
dates come to the . front door to get us.
"I forgot to mention, while my friends
were dating at the mature age of 12 and 13,
my old-fashioned mother refused to let me
date until I was 15 or 16. She was mean!
"MY MOTHER' WAS A COMPLETE
FAILURE AS A MOTHER.
"None of us has ever been arrested... or
beaten . a mate, , ..
• "Each of my brothers served his time in
the service of his country.... willingly, no
protesting. "
"AND WHOM , DO WE HAVE TO
BLAME FOR THIS TERRIBLE WAY WE
TURNED OUT? You're right ... our mean
mother!"
"LOOK AT ALL THE THINGS WE
MISSED.
"We never got to take part in a riot,
never burned draft cards or got to do a
million and one things our friends did.",
"OUR MEAN MOTHER made us grow
up into God-fearing, educated, honest
adults."
"Using this as a background, lam trying
// to raise my children.
"I stand a little taller and I am filled with
pride when my children call me. `mean'."
"YOU SEE....I thank God He gave me
the meanest mother in the world!"
