Young people graduate from babysitting course
On a beautiful evening last week, Monday,
April 22, it was gran'ation time for 31 young
people taking the-iBabysitters course. The
ceremony was held in St. Andrew's United
Church hall. The eight-week course was also
held there - two hours each Monday evening
for eight weeks this past winter.
Doug and Ruth Ann Brooks of Guelph
spent the weekend, April 20 and 21, in Ripley
at the home of his parents Dorothy and
Russell Brooks. Also Ernest, Eileen, David
and Gillian Brooks of London spent ,the
same weekend in Tiverton at the home of
Gerry, Linda, Kathy and Joey Brooks.
• Dorothy and Russell Brooks were guests
at a surprise party planned by .their family,
"on the occasion of their wedding anniver-
sary and Dorothy's birthday, held at the
Cleo Restaurant in Port Elgin. They would
like to thank Gerry, Linda, Kathy and Joey
of Tiverton; Doug and Ruth Ann of Guelph
and Ernest, Eileen, David and Gillian of
LOndon for thelovely party and gifts.
Francis and" Margaret Gemmell and Don
and Anna Macravish after spending the
past winter at their home in Tamarac,
Florida have now returned to their Nimes in
Ripley.
Margaret Gemmell reports that the
Ripley Wothen's Institute will meet this Fri-
day, May 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs:
Annie Scott.
Secretary Mrs. Nancy DaWson of Olivet
reports that the '85 Reunion Committee
meeting will be held on Monday, May6 in
the Ripley Huron Central School at 8:00 p.m.
She would like the chairmen to please bring
all their books of tickets and souvenirs (sold
and unsold) with them for this meeting.
Just. home from spending the winter in
Florida, Mr. and Mrs. Wally Nicholson: of
Strathroy, Ont. visited last Friday with
Wally's sister Evelyn Johnson in Ripley.
The course leader and organizer was Mrs.
Jan Fludder, superintendent of the Sunday
School. Her assistant leaders were Mrs.
ieleen Clark, a leader of Girls' Clubs for
several years, and Mrs. Lori Weber, the
president of the C.G.LT.
At the end of the course examinations
were written and marked. The grades were
from sixty to the mid -nineties. Now Ripley

• has 31 new certified babysitters. At the
graduation each of the seven boys and 24
girls, ages 10 to 14 years, was presented with
a personal certificate or diploma. /
The leaders arranged to have a different.
speaker or instructor on each of the even-
ings. They were: Rod MacDonald from Kin-
cardine Hospital staff, Ann Eadie, Gail Coil-
ing, Marjorie (Mrs. Tom) Culbert, Nancy
Greenwood, Ivan Cook and Bernie Twolan
from the Ripley Fire Department. Leader
Jan Fludder took the first night. These in-
structors had a wide range of experience
and knowledge to present to the young folks.
Local author Mrs. Dorinda Bowers of Vic-
toria Road, Point Clark, has received the
• third printing of her book "Dips with a Dif-
ference". The outsides of both the front
cover and the back cover are now colour
• photography of food - in all its//natural colour
with the reds, whites, greens, browns and so
on; making a most attractive display. Dorin-
da states that the actual layout of the ,
display was done by herself and her mother-
in-law Mrs. Betty Bowers of Chesley. Then
• it was photographed in colour by her father-
in-law Jack Bowers.
The grey picture of the Point Clark
Lighthouse has been retained in the book
simply by moving it to the inside of the front
cover. These changes have made the book.
more pleasing to look at and at no increase
in the price.

Last Thursday afternoon •Mrs. Dorothy
Beal of Stratford visited with .her sister
Fran Wylds in Room 101, County of Bruce
General Hospital, Walkerton. Then on Frit
day afternoon Elmer Wylds of Kincardine
went to see his sister-in-law Fran. He also
visited with other patients from this area.
• Donald Gillies of Ripley brought here a
copy of an early daily newspaper - The
Toronto World, Tuesday morning, June 27,
1899. The ads on the clothing page were mpst
interesting - 6500 Ladies Stylish Shirtwaists
to go on sale on Wednesday morning at the
W.A. Murray & Co. Limited store at 50 cents
each. At the Robert Simpson Company
Limited Men's suits - good all wool tweed
suits - five dollars each. In the same Simp-
son store all pure Irish linen table napkins,
16 inches square, were priced at 5 cents
each, and men's white shirts from sizes 14 to
17 at 25 cents each.
• Wednesday seemed to be the day of the
week for sales. Munson's Store at 183 Yonge
Street • in Toronto was selling its new
bicycles for $12.75 on June 27 - one day only.
Prices were great back then. Or were they
all that good? If you worked in, one of.
Ripley's three hotels at that time you would
get 4 dollars per month. •
The Huron Bruce Pony Club held its first
riding clinic in Kincardine on Sunday, April
28 at Nisbett's. Fran and Rob Warwick
• came down from Owen Sound and gave the
• senior riders dressage and jumping in-
structions. The juniors together with the
novice class had flat riding. The turnout was
good with 20 riders with horses attending.
The club hopes to have another clinic in May
or June.
' Our thanks goes to Nina Wyld of Bethel,
one of the club leaders, for phoning this
report.
