The Lucknow Sentinel, 1985-05-01, Page 19Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, May 1, 1985—Page 19 Young people graduate from babysitting course On a beautiful evening last week, Monday, April 22, it was gran'ation time for 31 young people taking the-iBabysitters course. The ceremony was held in St. Andrew's United Church hall. The eight-week course was also held there - two hours each Monday evening for eight weeks this past winter. Doug and Ruth Ann Brooks of Guelph spent the weekend, April 20 and 21, in Ripley at the home of his parents Dorothy and Russell Brooks. Also Ernest, Eileen, David and Gillian Brooks of London spent ,the same weekend in Tiverton at the home of Gerry, Linda, Kathy and Joey Brooks. • Dorothy and Russell Brooks were guests at a surprise party planned by .their family, "on the occasion of their wedding anniver- sary and Dorothy's birthday, held at the Cleo Restaurant in Port Elgin. They would like to thank Gerry, Linda, Kathy and Joey of Tiverton; Doug and Ruth Ann of Guelph and Ernest, Eileen, David and Gillian of LOndon for thelovely party and gifts. Francis and" Margaret Gemmell and Don and Anna Macravish after spending the past winter at their home in Tamarac, Florida have now returned to their Nimes in Ripley. Margaret Gemmell reports that the Ripley Wothen's Institute will meet this Fri- day, May 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs: Annie Scott. Secretary Mrs. Nancy DaWson of Olivet reports that the '85 Reunion Committee meeting will be held on Monday, May6 in the Ripley Huron Central School at 8:00 p.m. She would like the chairmen to please bring all their books of tickets and souvenirs (sold and unsold) with them for this meeting. Just. home from spending the winter in Florida, Mr. and Mrs. Wally Nicholson: of Strathroy, Ont. visited last Friday with Wally's sister Evelyn Johnson in Ripley. The course leader and organizer was Mrs. Jan Fludder, superintendent of the Sunday School. Her assistant leaders were Mrs. ieleen Clark, a leader of Girls' Clubs for several years, and Mrs. Lori Weber, the president of the C.G.LT. At the end of the course examinations were written and marked. The grades were from sixty to the mid -nineties. Now Ripley RIPLEY by Ab Wylds • has 31 new certified babysitters. At the graduation each of the seven boys and 24 girls, ages 10 to 14 years, was presented with a personal certificate or diploma. / The leaders arranged to have a different. speaker or instructor on each of the even- ings. They were: Rod MacDonald from Kin- cardine Hospital staff, Ann Eadie, Gail Coil- ing, Marjorie (Mrs. Tom) Culbert, Nancy Greenwood, Ivan Cook and Bernie Twolan from the Ripley Fire Department. Leader Jan Fludder took the first night. These in- structors had a wide range of experience and knowledge to present to the young folks. Local author Mrs. Dorinda Bowers of Vic- toria Road, Point Clark, has received the • third printing of her book "Dips with a Dif- ference". The outsides of both the front cover and the back cover are now colour • photography of food - in all its//natural colour with the reds, whites, greens, browns and so on; making a most attractive display. Dorin- da states that the actual layout of the , display was done by herself and her mother- in-law Mrs. Betty Bowers of Chesley. Then • it was photographed in colour by her father- in-law Jack Bowers. The grey picture of the Point Clark Lighthouse has been retained in the book simply by moving it to the inside of the front cover. These changes have made the book. more pleasing to look at and at no increase in the price. • Last Thursday afternoon •Mrs. Dorothy Beal of Stratford visited with .her sister Fran Wylds in Room 101, County of Bruce General Hospital, Walkerton. Then on Frit day afternoon Elmer Wylds of Kincardine went to see his sister-in-law Fran. He also visited with other patients from this area. • Donald Gillies of Ripley brought here a copy of an early daily newspaper - The Toronto World, Tuesday morning, June 27, 1899. The ads on the clothing page were mpst interesting - 6500 Ladies Stylish Shirtwaists to go on sale on Wednesday morning at the W.A. Murray & Co. Limited store at 50 cents each. At the Robert Simpson Company Limited Men's suits - good all wool tweed suits - five dollars each. In the same Simp- son store all pure Irish linen table napkins, 16 inches square, were priced at 5 cents each, and men's white shirts from sizes 14 to 17 at 25 cents each. • Wednesday seemed to be the day of the week for sales. Munson's Store at 183 Yonge Street • in Toronto was selling its new bicycles for $12.75 on June 27 - one day only. Prices were great back then. Or were they all that good? If you worked in, one of. Ripley's three hotels at that time you would get 4 dollars per month. • The Huron Bruce Pony Club held its first riding clinic in Kincardine on Sunday, April 28 at Nisbett's. Fran and Rob Warwick • came down from Owen Sound and gave the • senior riders dressage and jumping in- structions. The juniors together with the novice class had flat riding. The turnout was good with 20 riders with horses attending. The club hopes to have another clinic in May or June. ' Our thanks goes to Nina Wyld of Bethel, one of the club leaders, for phoning this report. 1/ Busing program for • kindergarten students By Stephanie Levesque Children who will be attending kindergarten in Huron County schools this fall will have the chance to find out about busing during the month of May. The Huron County board of education will start a program where children are taught the rules of riding a school bus before they actually start school. • • OPP Const. John Marshall, community services officer, and the board's transportation manager Bob Cunningham will be visiting the 24 schools in Huron from May 14 to 31 to teach the children. The registered students for kindergarten will be in attendance as well as their parents or guardians. At the Huron County board of education's March meeting, trustees were invited to participate. • The pre-school program for Victoria School students will be held at the school May 14 at 9:30 a.m. and at Robertson School • at 1:15 p.m. the same day.
