Pathfinders pay visit to Pinecrest
FEATURE REPORT
By Alan Rivett
Vicki Owen goes to see her friend
Margaret Robinson every month. Upon
seeing Vicki come through her door Marg-
aret breaks into. a smile. They will sit and
chat and perhaps play a• game of euchre
before it's time for Vicki to go. Ironically,
Vicki is 15 -years -old arid is still in public
school and Margaret is a resident at
Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home.
Vicki is a member of the Pathfinders in
Lucknow, a club for girls between the ages
of 12 - 16. On the third Thursday of the
month, the 10 girls in the club go' to the
nursing home to visit with their "grand-
parents" for a couple of hours.
"They're very nice girls," says Mrs.
Robinson. "I enjoy their company."
Down the, hall in another room, Karah
Kirkland, also a member of the Pathfind-
ers, is visiting with Mrs. Jessie Kirkland,
who is not related. "I enjoy just seeing my
`grandmother';" says Karate.
"It's a chance forme to meet girls in .the
community that I otherwise wouldn't have
met," says Mrs. Kirkland.
Wendy Gerster of Luclmow has been the
leader .of the Pathfinders since 1981. She
says the monthly visits with the nursing
home residents began in February last year
after the girls were required, through their
Pathfinders program, to come up with a
community service project.
Conununity Service
"I figured we could best serve the com-
munity by visiting at the nursing home,"
says Mrs: Gerster, who is assisted with her
leadership duties by Pat Boak.
The Pathfinders, instead of having their
regular Thursday meeting, spend that time
with the residents. She says the residents
really take pleasure having the young girls
visit them. In fact, last summer, the
nursing borne invited the Pathfinders for a
barbecue in appreciation of their visits.
"We play Bingo and talk to the people
on an individual basis," she says. "It
makes them feel like somebody still
cares."
Vicki Owen, 15, president of the
Lucknow Pathfinders, says she has a lot of
fun visiting with the senior citizens. "It's
good to get to know them. They tell you allo
about their families," she says. "Some
people (in Pathfinders) don't have grand-
parents so they enjoy being around older
people."

Vicki has been a member of the guiding
movement for nine years. She started off in
Brownies and says the basic difference
between it and Pathfinders is you, have to
accomplish more work.
"I think in Brownies you play a lot of
games, but in Pathfinders you have to get a
lot of work done because you're going for
the Canadian Cord. There are a lot of

challenges and it's a lot of work but, in the
long run, it's worthwhile," said Vicki, who
after Pathfinders would eventually like to
be a leader.
Mrs. Gerster says she became involved
in 'guiding because she agrees with the
basic idea of guiding which, simply put, is
to be a good person. W hen the Lucknow
