The Lucknow Sentinel, 1985-04-17, Page 7Luclmow Sentinel, Wednesday, April 17, 1985—Page 7 TO THE EDITOR Ashfield adopts road budget To the Editor: Herewith, once more, a late subscription renewal, for which I apologize. This time the hospitalization of my younger. brother, Alex; for several weeks with cancer has disrupted my usual routine. • Sinceorganizing, several years ago, a New Horizons group, to help save the Fastern bluebird, an endangered species, I have'- corresponded with several in the ,Lucknow area who have had varying success. Foci those who may be interested in my annual report last fall, bluebirds'laid over 25Q eggs in the boxes on my Bluebird. Trail. It is difficult to know just how many young survived to fly away, but allowing for predation and other damage to eggs and adults, I expect that 150 to 175 are now down south or on their way back here. This has-been about average for several years, and as a result a major spinoff of surplus birds seeking `nesting sites each spring has occurred for many miles in Ontario and across the Ottawa River into Quebec. I .. 'amfortunate in having an ideal bluebird. environment here - scattered small wooded areas and plenty of pasture and hay fields, real "horse" country, mainly riding horses. I was sorry' to hear that Harvey MacDougall's project petered out after a rather promising start. I feel sure that the cause was the gradual change from "mixed" farming to cash crop tanning - corn, beans, etc., quite an unsuitable environment for bluebirds. After an absence of about 60 years, I still find the Sentinel interesting. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, C. Graham MacKay, 269 Kirchoffer Ave., Ottawa, Ont. to the Editor: The historical committee of the Lucknow United Church areprogressing with their history but a few links are still Missing. We need the Sentinel reports of the laying .of the cornerstone of Lucknow Methodist Church (June 25, 1885) and the dedication of the building (December 5, 1985). If anyone has their grandmother's scrap book perhaps it might be there. The files of the Sentinel are missing for. these particular issues.
